Having read the book, but being aware that the movie had nothing to do with the book, I didn't have high hopes. I was pleasantly surprised with the first 45minutes of the movie. It was just aggressive enough to give it a little bit of a scare factor without going into a knock-off of 28 days later. I would say it was probably closer to I Am Legend for that part. But after he landed in Korea, it went down hill. Too much was shown in the trailers to make anything a surprise event and the resolution was just dumb.

I liked the climax. They rewrote/filmed it to be more intimate and I thought it worked. More suspenseful when it was contained in one building.

oh, i hated it. I actually was pretty bored with the whole thing, but the ending felt like they didnt know how to end the movie.
I feel the wild success of this movie was a huge surprise for the filmmakers.

That was fun! very violent, very gore ...good story, very similar to the comics. Karl Urban owns this movie.

Yeah Dredd was fun. For me it was Cersei who stole the show, though.

Also, regarding World War Z, I can't help but feel the zombies became much less fearsome by the end of the movie. At the start they're blowing hinges off of doors and headbutting their way through windscreens but by the end they're struggling to break through swinging doors.

Yes. The first 45 was good enough because the zombies were crazy aggressive, like swarming bugs, but by the end they were more less intelligent and fearsome. 28 Days Later did a good job of showing them starving to cause the slow down, this one not so much.

yeah Lena was awesome. The girl from Juno too...overall a very good comic book adaptation.

i bought IM3 and watched it again and i really see no other way for ultron to make it into the avengers other than a rogue suit

I liked this a lot - laughed my ass off. It did drag a bit towards the end, but otherwise very solid.

The acting is all around superb. Whatever Jake Gyllenhaal did to make his character more interesting, it worked.

But a couple plot holes. Hugh Jackman is stuck in the hole, right? And the old lady drove his truck into the back woods or whatever? Wouldn't the cops while searching the area already find the damn truck? I mean, they're searching for Hugh, and they're at the suspect's house, I'd think they'd know Hugh is there somewhere! And there was something else too but I'm too drunk to remember.

I'll give the movie a B-. The more I try to write scripts myslef, the more I'm critical of plot points. And this script won a screenplay contest a couple years ago. Good story, great acting, but don't try to pull the wool over my eyes.

Yeah, a bit of a hole, but I don't think it's such a big deal. They should've addressed the issue of the truck, sure, but the argument could be made they looked for Hugh and couldn't find him. The ending was great though.

Gyllenhaal's was the best performance by far. The strengths of the script consist of the little details. Gyllenhaal's character never mentions he's a recovering alcoholic, but they make this known to the audience through the AA ring, even though they never offer a close-up of it. There's also the scene where he rejects a drink from his boss. And a shot from inside Hugh's truck at the beginning of the movie that encompasses a crucifix hanging from the rvm also says a lot about him and his family without making a big deal of it. They're showing and not telling, the way it should be.

Anyway, the way they handled the whole theme of people becoming evil when they lose those they love is what really sold me on this movie.

The movie was fine. But there were two or three better movies buried within.

Dano and Gyllenhaal were excellent. Jackman and Howard were.... not so much.

They do a fair job of not talking down to the audience, and some of the little touches you mention are really nice -- especially where Gyllenhaal's character is concerned. But there's WAY too much telling not showing where the story is concerned. I enjoyed myself, but I really wanted this to be better.

Also, I think I missed something, can anyone clarify what happened when Joy escaped? What happened there? How did she see/know Jackman was at the house? Is that flash/memory they show real? If so, who was wearing the coat; who grabbed Jackman's daughter?

That's fair. I didn't enjoy Halle Berry's overall performance or that "true-true" nonsense but the rest of it... damn. Neo Seoul was especially awesome.

I have a hankering for some Fritz Lang. I want a marathon.

Btw, if you're staying in tonight, and you don't mind watching old cinema, watch Lang's Dr. Mabuse on TCM. It's one of my favorites.
