Im working through this all. Working through it with you guys too. Contradictions may be found but ultimately im here for the ride.
I think people have to feel that the material *is* good enough before they can accept it for what it is, and Pearl Jam for what they are. And some people just don't think it is good enough.

Its not what I want from Pearl Jam and im mourning that. Its fine. I think they are capable of more but i will never tire of hearing Vedders voice and in sirens he fucking kills it.
This is a strange record for sure. Wish it hasn't been 4 years. Also, i wish that it wont be another 4 after this one :\

Stupid Mop serves its purpose perfectly on Vitalogy, so it's great in that sense.

Thing is, I'm at the point where I have no shopping list for PJ at all. S/T wasn't what I 'wanted'. Backspacer wasn't what I 'wanted'. That's 7 years of relative disappointment (because I didn't hate everything). With so many frustrations, I realised that I'm not sure PJ's identity was going to be anything now other than playing what they feel like playing at the time. And so because I have no idea what they'll do next, I don't have expectations either. But I never once expected to be enjoying this album as much as I am. It's been looking better ever since MYM was released, then the artwork, then the first few songs... which were not what I was expecting given everything else, but this is Pearl Jam, if nothing else. They've never given us what we expected. Not me, anyway.

I'm also working through this but also haven't started listening to these songs including LIR and CC somewhat regularly until today and with repeat listens even sirens is at least better than LTRP which I just keep being disappointed by the awesomeness in that song that only comes and goes surrounded by bad cheese and shania twainesqe riffs ans melodies that just bum me out...also so much time between albums has put me in a much different place i was in even 2 years ago so yeah

The other hilarious thing is how much I've fucking raged about Matt's over-use of the ride cymbal in heavy rock songs, relative to his fear of the open hi-hat. In this song, I don't think he touches the ride once and it's mostly *all* open hi-hats AND A BALLAD. I just don't understand this man

Three thoughts on Sirens:
1) I don't know who's watching Breaking Bad here, but for those who are, I think this would be a perfect closing song lyrically for that show (which is set to end right about the album release date).
2) I honestly think this is the most commercially viable song they've released since Betterman. I listened to it a bunch of times today and I never tired of it. It's pop-ish, but has some haunting elements too which make it more listener-friendly for repeat listens. I love the lack of consistent chorus, which puts the focus on the "hear the sirens" - where it should be.
3) For those who say this is cheese, I can't imagine if they released Black today. Think about those lyrics. Think about that song. Is this really cheesier? I'm not so sure. I don't think this song is similar to Black in many other ways other than to say they are about on par as far as cheese goes, which to me, is relatively small. They both are sentimental ballads with solos, which sets up the discussion. But, if that's cheese, what's Release? If that's not also cheese, is it because it's about his Dad and not his wife?

I always thought 'Nothing Else Matters' by Metallica was just their terrible attempt at 'Release'.

One thing's for sure, like Pearl Jam themselves, he never does what I want but it always ends up working somehow.

I wonder how much the black album sounds like Ten. Never heard it.

Tallicuh's album was released on August 12 1991 and Ten was released on August 27th of the same year.
