Also agree...i was originally lukewarm to it based on it being a 2nd single...i really, really love the first half of this album.

The "government" section of lyrics is holding me back on River Cross. It's beautiful, but then I get bucked off the horse a bit right when this whole wonderful near-hour of music is winding down.

It's a little too on the nose. The rest of it is gorgeous.

Yeah, although, I just this moment checked the song thread and gave the lyrics a read now that a draft is up. Seeing them visually actually helped lessen how clunky it's felt to this point. Which I kind of knew would happen based on how my brain works, but, still, maybe now I can get on with focusing on all that's great about it.

Yet another observation: this album has real heft to it in the production. Right from the get go when The band kicks in on Who Ever Said it feels huge. All the rockers have that same weight to them but even the quieter/slower stuff just seems to have, I dunno more substance than recent PJ records. It’s a production thing that’s beyond my ability to deconstruct–definitely more than just cranking up the bass/kick. I don’t think the band has felt this heavy since Vs.

i think retrograde’s pretty good but would be easier to get into with a different placement on the album.

I doubt very much that Josh was given any real creative leadership with regard to performances, compositions, or song selection. More likely he did a great job of managing personalities and subtly nudging the band in certain directions (or avoiding others) without overtly taking the reins.

I think a big part of it is you can just tell they put a lot more time and effort into it; that's apparent when listening to the production choices, and how those interact (and sometimes even become) part of the arrangements. Even something as spare as Comes Then Goes; with that lyric, that doesn't seem to be something that can come out fully formed in a half hour. It just sounds like they put a lot of hours in on this one; not that it sounds labored, it just sounds considered.

Let's assume that was his role. Because you're right:
Why would these 5 Hall of Famers who have made some of the greatest songs of the last 30 years just hand the keys to him?
They wouldn't do that. But it's clear he had an influence on how these guys have shifted from what they sounded like 7 years ago... which is to be expected.
