Hell I read an article yesterday about his supporters in the Hamptons who are afraid to tell people they like him.

Not necessarily. If taken by itself, it could been seen as not expanding demand for limited social services. Taken in the context of everything else he has done...

Every single long running divisive issue he’s weighed in on has swung the country leftwards as a result, from trans rights to health care to gun control to immigration. Whether it’s a consequence of his extreme negativity polling, or just because he doesn’t know how to talk about an issue except in the ugliest, meanest terms, Donald Trump has consistently helped to change attitudes in America in a manner that harms his re-election chances.

I think it’s the latter, by the way. Whatever mean spirited gibberish he blurts out, his entire party feels the need to defend and insist is true. So instead of offering a nuanced, thought out argument, the Republican Party is presenting itself as stubborn, heartless, and stupid.

The Republicans aren't taking the long view on social services when it comes to immigration. They don't view social services as part of the long view at all. Republicans are exploding the deficit to use as an excuse to gut social services in the future.

If Trump were to serve 8 years he's on pace to have added almost the exact same amount to the national debt as Obama. Remember when he promised to completely eliminate the national debt during his term?

Of course one came to office at the trough of the worst recession in 80 years and one inherited a strong economy...

:haha:
Trump’s presumed lower education/income/hate on coastal elites eats that up because as a general rule, it is effective rhetoric to identify and vilify a group in a worse situation than where the hypothetical base is. It makes them feel good because it gives them someone to stick their nose up at. Classic psychological device to use.

I for one am not convinced that 40% of the American voter that counts for his base are comprised of this. I think the base comes from all socio-economic spaces - and while some take his rhetoric to heart, many of his supporters don’t believe in what he says at all but tribally get a huge kick out of him sticking his thumb in liberals eyes and causing the daily outrage machine to churn in overdrive. In fact, I am inclined to think that hurting the perceived enemy is more satisfying than actually doing any good for the country.
At the end of the day, “owning the libs” is what matters most. Trump didn’t start that but he sure knows how to exploit it.

You're absolutely right.

Trumptards hate liberals more than they love their country. I have been saying this since day one, and we still see it playing out every day.

That's why it will never matter to them what he says or what he does. As long as it hurts liberals, it's all good.

I just wish they realized how dumb it makes them look.
