There is nothing assholely about this post and being honest about what you want from the album is better than the canned trolling in most threads. Plus, I would dare to say a majority of long time fans feel this way. I want a logical follow-on to Binaural, not another Backspacer.

To be fair, this is coming from a guy who enjoyed Backspacer. I enjoyed it for the nice little breather of a record it was (or should have been until 3.5 years had passed).

But if they committed, they could do something much bigger and better and challenging (for themselves and everyone else).

I dont trust pit fans but there is also a large contingent of fans who dont waste their days on the internet!

More than anything specific, I just really want the band to make a very honest appraisal of what their strengths and limits are and work within those parameters as best they can.

They need to be aware of the fact that Ed's voice is not the same instrument now as it was 10 or 15 years ago - the fact that they've had to play songs from their last two records in lower keys than they were recorded (in the case of Backspacer, immediately after its release) is evidence that Ed hasn't quite embraced that idea as much as he should.

Since they can't rely on Vedder as a key instrument in the way they once did, I really think they need to focus on the songwriting and arrangements to pick up the slack. Aside from the quality of the songs themselves, I really enjoyed the guitar arrangements on S/T. It really felt as though Mike and Stone had taken the time to write complimentary parts for most of the songs, not simply churning away at some power chords until Mike broke away to do a solo. They really seemed to drop away from that kind of thoughtfulness on Backspacer, unfortunately.

Basically, I'd like an album of songs where the band have clearly given thought to what role each individual instrument is adding to the song; Ed doesn't need to play guitar unless there's a compelling reason for him to do so. I'd like to see Ed stop forcing a square peg into a round hole and return to the vocal approach he displayed on Riot Act. Lastly, I don't want many Vedder-penned songs - songs like I Am Mine, World Wide Suicide, Love Boat Captain, Gone and Unthought Known are great displays of the kind of guitar arrangements I'd like them to move away from. It's not necessarily a fault of his writing, I'm sure they'd sound great with a sparser combo, but Ed just doesn't (very often) write songs with space for three guitars to do interesting things.

And I largely agree, speeno. I think I enjoy vedder's current vocals a lot more than you do (and prefer them to riot act ed), but for the most part the songs ed writes go leave the other guitarists criminally underutilized. There are exceptions (I think WWS and I am Mine are two of them) but nevertheless...

Their three guitar attack has been mostly pointless over the years. I totally understand the desire to want to play guitar live in front of 20,000 people but in the end most of their 3 guitar songs are unnecessary. Its either all of them chugging away at the same power chords, or stone decides to just play acoustic. Yet it really does not add much to the song. I love eds songs but I think he should not play guitar on some of them live. Or perhaps take some time to re work some other interesting guitar parts that complement the same part, instead of all 3 cranking away at 3 chords.

S/T is a great record (other than production) because of that, as spenno stated. The guitar parts were interesting and there was enough going on between mike and stone to keep your ear to the ground. Except - gone - which is exactly what is wrong with many of eds compositions (lately).

And on top of putting out an amazing album - stop fucking putting out shitty merch and pimping everything but music on your website.

Yes. Gone really takes the wind out of side 2's sails, so to speak. And the fact that Ed was so enamored with it that he rushed it onto the album at the last minute is troubling.

However, that's one of his few false moves of the time period, b/c I thought he had just the right instincts on Into the Wild and his solo tours thereafter.

Its actually kind of funny There are a handful of moments over the PJ career that you can relate to the Last Waltz. Or at least some phrases that Ed has used. He clearly had spent many-a-nights watching and internalizing this concert film. His cover of Forever Young, "you know this guy" re: Neil Young, his cover of helpless....

I'm on board with this.

I don't want Pink Floyd as much as I want them to sit down, listen to Psychedelic Pill for 3 consecutive days and get inspired. I think, like may others here, that the band can really benefit from working on adding a bit more texture - I don't want them to re-record No Code per se, but many of those elements would really serve them well now, after two very straight forward rock records. I think some of us want Of the Earth around because it's the first song we've heard in a while that really reaches for that texture and slightly offbeat approach that balances the experimental with the familiar.
