There's an answer to this that doesn't include getting rid of ID requirements. Voter suppression does exist (though it's tremendously overstated), but its not because of ID requirements, something which is the norm everywhere else on earth.

But you can't talk about ID requirements as if they're a value-neutral policy without taking into consideration the underlying infrastructure. Or rather--sure, it's not the voter ID requirement that's the problem, it's the time and money associated with getting an ID, making sure it's up-to-date, and then supplying it in person on election day. But then the requirement becomes the node at which this unequally distributed burden is felt.

Ok then microchip everyone at birth.

Says you. Suppression is another way of saying "it makes voting harder." As Mickey describes this requirement makes the ability to vote harder disproportionately. If there were steps taken to make getting an ID easier, or if the conversation was to simply put one's photo next to their name on the voting roster, then it wouldn't represent suppression.

The other side of this is that I just go around on election day without an ID and vote in like a dozen cities where I don’t actually live.

One side wants easy. The other side wants integrity. If those are my two choices I’m going integrity all the way.

Burt has a point though, the argument over voting rights is a smokescreen so we don’t talk about other actually nefarious things.
