I'm in school. It's university in german. I'm not sure what the equivalent in the US would be. College I think? We do Bachelor and Master both in university and I'm doing my bachelor right now.

We generally call it college whether you are at a college or a university. We have colleges and universities, though. Generally the difference is that Universities have graduate programs (NY state requires that you have 4 to call yourself a university) and colleges do not.

Ah, I didn't know that. It's so different here in germany and my knowledge about your system is pretty small. :haha: You don't chose a specific topic that you're going to study when going to college right away in the US, right? You can/must chose a major at some point? That always confused me when listening to someone talking about college. In germany you go into university with a specific major and only study that. (Or sometimes it's a split major especially if you want to be a teacher)

Many students do go to college planning to study a particular field, but generally colleges are built around a 4 year program, and there is almost always some space built in for people to try new things and figure out what they want to do before they commit.

So has everyone soured on this song already? I guess maybe it has to do with where I am in life, but I really fucking like it. I seem to have similar tastes to TJ ( I sure hope TJ isn't an elderly woman) because I've been listening Sirens and Swallowed Whole the most with Getaway close behind.

Cold Confession, however, might still be my favorite song we've heard in the last 3 months.

i can't do anything about it by now - it's stuck in my head. it's somewhat annoying though. last night i put it on and going from record to record, i ended up playing Amnesiac (2002) and when Pyramid song arrived, i felt almost ashamed about me liking Sirens. i mean, i like music and i don't think musical genres should be bluntly compared to each other but this struck me as: back in 2000, 2001, Radiohead and Pearl Jam both had the potential to make something that would change the face of "modern rock". of course, we know what happened and it's not really important in the end as long as we enjoy the music but still...many PJ fans think that this song is a "departure" or a radical change. come the fuck on. at best it's a great song - we're far from any kind of revolution here.

I tend to agree. If we went into the song with no expectations I think the response would be different. To me it's like NAIS where sometimes it's boring and other times it's maybe one of the best songs they've done. Depends on my mood...

NAIS is never boring to me. I can see that it is a momentum killer but it is in my Top 5 and it is one I the finest things they've done. I like more of this vibe and in the direction of You Are, SoH, CC. Not this time yet.

has anyone argued that it is a radical departure in any context other than not a song that they expected pearl jam to write?

Right, I mean, NAIS is easily a top ten song for me but only if you engage and listen to the song if that makes sense. SOH is top five for me. You Are can kiss my ass but I do tend to like the songs you can escape into. Sirens ain't that but the first two minutes really gets me. Plus I think it will be better live which to me is absolutely the case for NAIS and SOH. I dunno, I'm drunk.
