Of the Earth being on the album would reinforce my hope that they're going for something bigger than just a hodgepodge of songs that sound like Pearl Jam, i.e., punky number, a few ballads, mid-tempo rockers, waves, oceans, etc. I'm looking for something more ethereal - a vibe, a tone, a feeling - ideas with room to breathe and an adventurous sense of possibility.

In short, I'm looking for Pink Floyd. And I wouldn't be looking for it if I didn't think they had it in 'em. Essentially, what Binaural should have been until they shit their collective pants and wrestled the reigns from Tchad Blake in order to take Brendan O'Brien's familiar life preserver.

I want Sleight of Hand on steroids. With some nice melodies.

But, fuck me. It's not about me. Unless, of course, Ed is reading this post and feels the clearing shock of enlightenment. In that case, Uncle Edward, read this post to your bandmates. And get Jack Irons on the phone.
Hah awesome post! NOTHING will please the RM establishment outisde of a specific focus-group created album or a rusty gray delorean taking them back to 1996.

And I largely agree, speeno. I think I enjoy vedder's current vocals a lot more than you do (and prefer them to riot act ed), but for the most part the songs ed writes go leave the other guitarists criminally underutilized. There are exceptions (I think WWS Severed Hand I am Mine corduroy insignifigance porch of the earth not for you immortality parting ways habit rvm etc....)...

If they come back to 1996, then they will be living in the age of pj fans hating jack irons and calling No Code the worst pj record ever.

spenno, can you elaborate on what you find interesting about Avocado's arrangements in contrast with Backspacer? I'm not hearing anything particularly exciting.

I'm talking about the guitar interplay between Mike and Stone more than arrangements in a general sense. I don't have any of the songs here to pick out specific moments that I really like, but two songs in particular that are good examples (from memory) are Marker and Unemployable. They're not simply churning away at the same simple chords, there's interlinking lines and complimentary voicings going on that really make the most of that material. I really enjoy those duelling harmony lines in Comatose too.

I didn't hear much of that kind of thing on Backspacer. Again, it's not easy without the songs here to refer to, but I didn't hear that same detail in Stone and Mike's guitar parts. Generally, I found the guitars pretty weak on Backspacer, both in terms of sound and the guitar parts themselves.

I agree with your Avocado examples. Say what you will about the songs, but the guitar arrangements in The Fixer and Got Some are really tight.

I sort of agree about the guitars on Backspacer. There's a simplicity and not much of the real intertwined parts we usually get from the two boys. But I think a lot of these songs need that. I know you're not a FON fan Spenno, but a song like that sort of needs all it's guitars to be headed the same place together, if that makes sense.
I'm gonna have to go back again and listen to ST for good guitar work, some of PJs best playing is when these two parts play off each other and to each other, but too of my head I don't remember much of that on ST either. A view possibly tainted by my overall dislike for that record. But I'll go listen anyways.

As I said before in some thread (maybe even this one), listen to the raw guitar sound from the EPK. Shows you all you need to know about what the record should have sounded like.

i was actually very surprised when avocado came out because i felt the same way....seemed like Stone and Mike worked very closed on how their guitars needed to interact with echa other...kinda like Vs.

That's a great point. Every single era has it's haters (this goes for any worthwhile artist actually). In fact, the No Code era had MORE haters than any other era, really. This era has it's haters. My takeaway is to just roll with it. Some people willl love it, some people will hate it. I like to follow an artists's vision as long as they are being true to it.

Exactly...this is why i consider an album like Backspacer as experimental as No Code...two different moments were the band kinda put the middle finger to their hardcore fans. I remember No Code had so much shit all over, it seemed PJ was dead at the time because they didnt play jeremy or whatever ten song...Actually i remember people bitching about the 2000 tour, because they didnt rock like they used to and they dont play ten or vs or vitalogy...and now seems like it was the greatest tour ever played.

Anyway, i guess im lucky i love most of the eras ( dont care that much for the 2003-2004 one).

Yeahm it's like they want an album to be envelope pushing and divisive but they want to be the ones on the right side of the dividing line. Some folks want something that pushes other folks as long as they are not the ones being pushed.

I don't think anyone wants a divisive album just for the sake of it or some other bullshit like that. Also, trying to be more radio-friendly because you fell off the mainstream radar does not mean you're pushing the envelope.

I think you're missing my point. Maybe they are pushing YOUR envelope, maybe that's what they are trying to do. Maybe they are sick of b-side/rarity-obsessed entitled fans who think they can press "play" on the band and get what they want. I think ultimately they may want to feel free. They aren't trapped by the mainstream right now that's for sure, if they feel trapped by anyone it's the hardcore fans. Just like they were sick of stagnating in the mainstram way back when, maybe they are sick of stagnating within the current fanbase. I personally just love it when a rock band fucks shit up.
