I mean, we're back to how do these things start?

Police come out to tell a guy to leave his ex-wife's house b/c he's not supposed to be there.

[5 minutes]

Police are mowing down a man in the street.

I'm not saying every situation can be de-escalated by police, but their record with black suspects is particularly shitty.

Eric Garner sold loose cigarettes, so he was choked to death.
George Floyd used a counterfiet bill, so he was choked to death.
Dajerria Bector was at a loud pool party, so she was slammed on the ground.
Breonna Davis once dated a drug dealer, so she was gunned down in her own bed.
Philandro Castile was pulled over for a routine traffic stop, so he was shot in front of his girlfriend and kid.

No. Fucking NO!

Fuck this, Jacob Blake had a knife bullshit. Maybe he did. Maybe he even tried to fight them.
The police were called to deal with trespassing and paralyzed a man with seven gunshots in front of his kids to KEEP him from leaving. Why the fuck do you think people want the cops to be replaced with social workers?
Let's try the "reimagined policing" model in a major American city. Violent crime will skyrocket and you'll have a bunch of dead social workers, but hopefully we'll finally be able to put that stupid concept to bed.
Yes, addressing non-violent criminals with something other than a gun will surely escalate into murder over and over again.
Are you really contending that Jacob Blake was a non-violent criminal?

looking at the various videos, all of these dress up army guys look silly walking around with guns.

I get it, 2nd amendment and all, and I'm not against guns. I'd like to think as a society we've matured from Wild West and can behave like rational human beings in public without having to arm ourselves.

Do I like to shoot guns at a range? sure, every once in awhile. Do I want to walk around carrying guns to defend myself or have other people walking around with guns? no

This coming from an account that stole another user's avatar, signature, and location. Very stable behavior.

What violence was he committing prior to the arrival of the police? Violently being somewhere he wasn't supposed to be?
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

If we reserved judgement until the preliminary investigation is complete, maybe someone could answer that.

You'd have to ask his ex-girlfriend, but it was apparently bad enough to result in a 911 call. He had an active warrant for sexual assault, disorderly conduct, and criminal trespassing related to a domestic incident. He was arrested in 2015 for pulling a gun out at bar. This was not a stand up dude.

People acting like shooting someone is the only response to a perceived (or even potential) crime. No one has the authority to police others by shooting them.

This applies to 17 year old vigilantes and to trained officers who shoot Black men in the back seven times.

But your post has nothing to do with one of the issues being discussed. And may not have anything to do with the other.

that’s true, but look at the alternative. Horrible violence and looting in Minneapolis last night and Chicago last week or the week before, both based on false information promoted on social media. We here can’t fix that, but we can at least be the change we want to see in the world and not rely on 30 seconds of vertical video to be the arbiter of what we believe.

A meme in my Instagram feed just came up that is very fitting for this thread.

"US politics to an outsider is like walking in on an argument about how to best punch babies. People expect you to pick a side, but you just stand there wondering why they're punching babies."
Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.
