I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Open question: Who is the most underrated "great director?" Who is the most overrated?

For me, I think Antonioni is underrated, while Kurosawa is overrated. But there are probably lots of answers I could come up with.

Actually Tarkovsky is probably even more overrated than Kurosawa. And Richard Linklater.

Underrated: Milos Forman. Looking past Cuckoo's Nest and Amadeus, I love his Czech New Wave stuff and it barely ever gets talked about.

Overrated: Probably Ozu?

Also fuck your Tarkovsky hate

I'm the wrong dude to ask because I don't have the breadth of experience that you guys have. For example, Ozu? I'm not sure I've ever heard that name. So, for my money, a person I've never heard of can't really be overrated.

I've never seen a Tarkovsky nor a Kurosawa film, though obviously I'm familiar with their respective legacies. Just can't comment on whether or not they are overrated.

As far as the guys I'm familiar with, I'd say Tarantino and Spielberg are the most overrated. As for overrated... Todd Solondz. Shane Carruth and Sarah Polley come to mind as well; though they don't have large bodies of work yet.

Almodovar and David Lynch are guys that I think are complete geniuses and don't get enough credit in wide circles. Or at least in the circles I travel in. Maybe they are properly rated across the globe, I'm not sure. But it feels like those guys are massively underrated in my experience.

Chris is already decent, I'd argue good. Liam ? ... not enough information available.

I would really love to see this.
I would watch that.

Yea, was reading an interview about this just a couple days ago -- maybe on Vulture? -- and Thornton says that Harvey Weinstein has been continually supportive of a release, and that it's entirely Lanois's fault for not signing off the music rights.
Fingers crossed. I still haven't seen the theatrical cut because I figured... what's the point? I'd love to see Billy's original vision.

James Franco's test footage for his abandoned Blood Meridian project is fairly compelling:

tragabigzanda wrote:Why do you say that? I'm not saying it's amazing, and at least Franco didn't put himself in the "movie." But like that he allows for silence, doesn't have any musical cues, and generally gets the gist of how the lush dialogue could be delivered in such a way that it sounds somewhat natural.
Oh, I didn't watch it. I just hate James Franco and think Blood Meridian is a terrible subject for a film.

McCarthy is my favorite modern author so I'm picky about his books being made into movies, but Child of God, No Country, and The Road were all really well done. I don't mind Franco's involvement but yeah the subject matter could be tricky for a film
