That aforementioned Malazan series never adopts an omniscient third person narrator, and has no formal objective history. So Erikson (the author) goes a step beyond the first person perspective Martin often writes from to making even history subjective. It made for some very complicated reading but I admired the move he was making. The author was an anthropologist and he writes like one.

Malazan only partly works for me. At its best it's brilliant, really second to none, but other times it's as if he's rambling on for hours, forcing himself to use every single remote character and plot device. If only he had BO'B as a producer.

Some stories were better than others, to be sure. What was really amazing about these books is that while the pacing was almost always slow at the beginning (dozens of characters, multiple new storylines) when they start to come together they are just incredible. He writes amazing climaxes, and they go on for hundreds of pages. It's like getting the best 40 pages of a book 5 times over.

I can only agree with that. Erikson has easily the best endings of any author. Sometimes you struggle for 600 pages, and then suddenly it all makes sense, all the red threads connect, ane you can do nothing but turn the page for the next few hundred pages.

these aren't books for the weak. they really require a pretty major investment on the part of the reader, but he never once let me down.

Yeah, the lack of Tyrion and Jaime are painfully obvious in FoC. Especially Jaime. That hurt the book. Probably the only thing I dislike about it. I kinda liked not having Tyrion for an entire book. It really amped up the suspense in his story. I wish the payoff in Dance had been greater.

What you're saying makes a lot of sense. Just curious - were you reading these as they were released? I could see why people were so upset with FoC after waiting for so long to get it after SoS.

I binge read these books well after they were released, so the lack of the main characters didn't bug me too much with FoC. But, if I had read it as it was released I think I would've been really disappointed.

Very good point. Like you, I started reading them after the first four were published. So I did't have to wait. But, I do totally understand what you're saying. And I think you're right. I may have felt differently if I'd had to wait a decade or whatever it was.

So, where do we think this season opens? How long before the wedding of Joffrey? I read the book last summer and can't remember some of the story lines that were intriguing.

I think the Joffrey wedding will be in one of the first four or five episodes. I kind of forgot how season three left off though.

I bet the first episode sets up the wedding in the 2nd. They still have to build a little more to make the tension between Tyrion and Joff. I wonder if they'll fit in that Joffrey sent the assassin to kill Bran with the valyrian dagger.
