Every St. Vincent record is excellent.

yeah, they are great. I could list another band from Patton but i would say FNM is the right call.

You should familiarize yourself with Nick Drake. Even you you don’t like his music, his story is one of the most interesting in modern music.

The Beatles and Nick Drake are the only 2 listed in the thread so far that I agree with.

It's only the word "excellent" that precludes them, I think. If we go back in time to what this thread originally said -- "consistently good" -- then I think Pearl Jam count.

BS and LB are solid records. But they aren't excellent. To your point, though, the first seven are. And for my money, damn near the best seven album run in all of music history.

R.E.M were remarkably consistent, even while constantly evolving.

I hard agreed with Sigur Ros earlier in the thread but then I remembered "Von" isn't excellent

also I put forward Stevie Wonder but on second thought I've realised I can't vouch for the entirety of his 80s output

this is true; my least favourite of theirs is Monster but I probably wouldn't argue if someone called it excellent

Monster just has such a great aesthetic. It's top 5 for me easy. But the great thing about R.E.M. is you can hear a song like Harborcoat and go nuts over it having not really let it grab you initially. Lot of relisten value in their catalog.

Could that streak be honestly stretched to 8? How many solid songs does an album require to be excellent?

Solid: life wasted, wws, marker, parachutes, Army Reserve, inside job

A lot of fans like: severed hand, unemployable, come back

Poppy but catchy: Gone

Acquired taste but rocks: comotose

1. "Life Wasted"
2. "World Wide Suicide"
3. "Comatose"
4. "Severed Hand"
5. "Marker in the Sand"
6. "Parachutes"
7. "Unemployable"
8. "Big Wave"
9. "Gone"
10. "Wasted Reprise[II]"
11. "Army Reserve"
12. "Come Back"
13. "Inside Job"
I pledge to be 100% boring and never troll-out again. I will make my interactions here pleasant, like sitting through an agricultural economics class.

I’d argue that excellent albums are made up of mostly excellent songs, not solid ones. Just my take. I’ve admittedly never been a big fan of S/T. I like Backspacer more.

Life Wasted is excellent.

ehhhh
The only records of his I can think of that are not excellent are Let Me Up, I’ve Had Enough (meh), Southern Accents (very good, not excellent), and The Last DJ (had its moments but not excellent). Otherwise we are talking one excellent album after another. I am not keeping count but there’s at least a dozen of them, no?
For as great as Petty is, he really had no all killer no filler albums.

RATM mentions are a joke.
Wildflowers is all killer no filler.

Damn the Torpedoes, Hard Promises, Full Moon Fever, She’s the One, Mojo, and Hypnotic Eye - is they had filler I never noticed it. The others - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, You’re Gonna Get It, Long After Dark, Into the Great Wide Open, Echo, and Highway Companion - all maybe have a song or two I can do without but would still rate as excellent. Even the Live Anthology which is like 4 hours long, is phenomenal. So I stay true to my original thought that he was close - especially for an artist with a large catalogue.
I like Petty a lot but I think he'd be more of a candidate for the "Artists Who Generally Made Pretty Solid Records" thread.

Same with Will Oldham.
