This past November, Montreal post-punk revivalists Ought announced that they had broken up. 'Twas a shame, but there was a silver lining: vocalist/guitarist Tim Darcy and bassist Ben Stidworthy were going to continue making music together in a new group, Cola, with drummer Evan J. Cartwright who's played with all kinds of Toronto-associated acts. They released a single, "Blank Curtain" to coincide with that announcement, and have now revealed that a debut album, Deep in View is coming May 20 via the Fire Talk label. A second song, "So Excited" has also been released. So far, Cola is like a more austere version of Ought, mining a similar sound without the accompaniment of keyboards and with a dryer, more even-handed approach. Listen to both tunes on Bandcamp:

Every album this guy has released on ECM has been just lovely.

Nobody told me there’s a new Mike Campbell & the Dirty Knobs album out today. Got through some of it. Perfectly tasty classic rock.

I love Ought, and was lucky enough to see them in a tiny venue. Loved Tim Darcy's solo album as well. I'm happy they're still making music. It sounds great.

i hadn't given black country, new road a real chance until yesterday. i've been playing their latest album this morning. it's going perfectly with the overcast, rainy weather this morning.

i think i tried playing their previous album in my car, which...i'm sure it can be done, but i think this band is best absorbed/digested/listened to via headphones or home stereo.

Nice! I wish I got the chance to see Ought play. I almost went to a street festival in Albany, NY in 2018 just to see them, but backed out last minute. I didn't want to do the 2.5 hour drive to an unfamiliar city on my own, but also didn't think my wife and one-year-old would enjoy it much.

My cousin managed to convince me to try the new album, and after some initial difficulty, I've grown to enjoy it. I picked up a copy of both albums this past Bandcamp Friday with the hope that I'll start to break through on the debut.

I have tried to get through this album a few times and every time I get stuck at "Science Fair" and can't get past it, have to turn off.

I've found that both albums have started out with a song that really appeals to me; "Bread Song" on Ants From Up There and "Track X" from For the First Time. I'm really fond of the Steve Reich kind of thing they're doing with the horns and strings at times on both albums, and that's what managed to sway me on the new one, I think.

A few years ago a good mate of mine died from cancer and his wife asked me to sort out music for the church service and the graveside. I asked his 3 kids (early 20s at the time) if they had any specific requests. The youngest said he didn't care, I could just play all Gang of Youths if I wanted and he'd be happy.

I put this on for him special that day.

I'm officially down a Gang of Youths rabbit hole. I think I fucking love this band.

Seeing them on Wednesday, can't wait - my first proper gig for what seems like ages

Same as dad, this one's really clicking for me today (rainy, cloudy). Still think I prefer their first album but tracks like "Concorde" and "Good Will Hunting" are tops.
