This is such a strange lyric--lizards are hardly the member of the animal kingdom that come to mind when you think of mindless, rapid-fire procreating.

Perhaps Ed is trying to bring a new elegance to the purely biological side of reproduction, trying to move it away from the skittish, almost aggressive pleasure-pounding suggested by the far cruder "fucking like rabbits" and towards the more curvacious, almost dancelike motions affiliated with the reproduction of certain reptiles, from whose leisure we can reasonably assume do not merely "fuck" but rather "make love."

I wonder if this is a throwback to "Faithfull," where he says "like geckos, that nobody hears"--perhaps he's implying the quiet, private manner in which these creatures repopulate the world with their own kind, the whole circle of life regenerating itself in private while we "upstairs" remain oblivious, distracted by "all of this noise."

Eddie really likes mentioning reptiles in songs about religion.
Great thoughts. I love lizards so I'm OK with this.

Simon Says that we are not allowed to consider.

I thinks thats how it goes!

I thought the words in Faithfull were "like echoes..." but I could be wrong.

I don't think i have been this crazy about a pearl jam tune since man of the hour!!! and i like S/T and Backspacer to some extent!!

Everything works here, and when he goes into the chorus there seems to be some cool guitar interplay coming in, which i guess i will know for sure when we have a better version of this...

You mean, "now I can make love to that mystery like a lizard"?

Show a little discretion.

It's sure nice to hear the surging, insistent Pearl Jam sound come back. The chorus here is something they've been avoiding for years. I was starting to think it was something I had imagined they did. Nope, here it is again. Teenage me would love this.

A couple changes to the working lyrics:

"GETAWAY"

everyone’s a critic looking back up the river
every boat is leaking in this town
everybody is thinking that they'll all be delivered
sitting in a box like lost and found

but i found my place and it’s all right
we’re all searching for a better way
get this off my plate
it’s all right
I got my own way to believe

find a lighthouse in the dark stormy weather
we all could use a sedative right now
holy rollers sitting with their backs to the middle
all alone and sinking is the bow

and if you want to have to pray
it’s all right
we all be thinking with our different brain
get this off my plate
it’s all right
I got my own way to believe

it’s okay
sometimes you find yourself having to put all your faith in no faith
mine is mine and yours won’t take its place
now make your getaway

science says we’re making love like the lizards
try and say that fossils ain’t profound
silence says we’re not allowed to consider
silence says stand up sit down you’re out

But I found my place
and it’s all right
I’m bearing witness to some bigger things
get this off my plate
it’s all right
I’ve got my own way to believe

it’s okay
sometimes you find yourself being told to change your ways
there’s no way
mine is mine and yours won’t take its place
now make your getaway

it’s okay
sometimes you find yourself having to put all your faith in no faith
mine is mine and yours won’t take its place
now make your getaway
it’s okay
sometimes you find yourself being told to change your ways
for god’s sake
mine is mine and yours won’t take its place
now make your getaway

I hear the "all alone and sinking is the bow" part but I'm still hearing "Simon says" instead of silence and "substantial things" instead of "some bigger" things.

I am absolutely loving the hook in this song. I'm loving everything about it actually. It all just flows so well from beginning to end.

edit: I know most people are like...radio friendly is lame..but I honestly feel like this would do great as a single. I could even hear my local "anti new Pearl Jam" radio station playing this...a lot. They haven't played a "new" Pearl Jam song since Given To Fly...they suck big balls. I may be in the minority here but I remember being 14 and wearing Zepplin t-shirts and people telling me that it was awesome that I was into classic rock. I would love to see a kid wearing a Pearl Jam shirt now, not because of their old catalog but because they heard something new on the radio and got into them that way. Discovered them because of something current and relevant.

"Simon says" could fit, but I still think it is "science". "Substantial things" could work too. I've listened a number of times though and I still hear "some bigger things". Hard to tell.

I think so too. It really gets better with each listen. It could rival many of the classic PJ openers. I guess time will tell.
