What about it makes you say that? To me, it's always felt like a severely meandering excuse to jam with a couple of nice lyrics thrown in, which, granted, would have been a pretty awesome respite during the relative wasteland of Backspacer and Lightning Bolt.Birds in Hell wrote:I am fully onboard this train.96583UP wrote:OTE is the modern Pearl Jam I wish we had
I think it's arguably the band's best song post-Binaural.
I think a "meandering excuse to jam" is exactly the kind of song I'd wish they'd write more often.RockPusher wrote:What about it makes you say that? Yeah, the whole extended solo has the energy of Ten/Vs/Vitalogy. Great guitar, and a WICKED bass line.Birds in Hell wrote:I am fully onboard this train.96583UP wrote:OTE is the modern Pearl Jam I wish we had

I think all of the musical ideas are really strong, I think they work together really well, I think Ed does exactly what's needed and nothing more, I think the band play the hell out of it - there's much to love and very little to criticise to my ears.
It's also the kind of song they could only have written with Matt, which is a big plus in my book: the idea of really committing to this version of the band, not trying to hark back to a previous version of themselves or giving Matt material that doesn't play to his strengths.
I've been a big fan since the first time they played it live (Dublin 2010, I think). As far as modern Pearl Jam, it's virtually the template of what I wish they were doing more of.
I appreciate this explanation. I think I agree with McParadigm in that I like the parts, I just don't know that they are put together to my liking. I feel the same way about a nonexistent song called something like Final Term. Sorry 96583UP for not letting you have the last word.Birds in Hell wrote:I think a "meandering excuse to jam" is exactly the kind of song I'd wish they'd write more often.RockPusher wrote:What about it makes you say that? Force of nature is a perfectly decent studio song. But it doesn’t play well to the masses in a live setting; only people like us really enjoy it.igotworms wrote:More than Retrograde really surprises me. Thought that had been played quite a bit. Force Of Nature's lack of airplay continues to confuse me.
