I didn't really care for it. The ending was kind of cool and unique though.

Interesting to see them covered by other artists that people respect, but that was pretty forgettable, and the noise bit at the end was pretty bad.

Who is tonight?

Tonight is Dierks Bentley, country superstar and general curly-locked studmuffin. My wife is a fan of his--he does typical assembly line Nashville shit, but he also has an affinity for traditional bluegrass/gospel-type stuff that I find refreshing among musicians of his kind. He did a covers album a few years back that featured bluegrass arrangements of Bob Dylan's "Senor" and U2's "Pride," so he's at least somewhat adherent to his own whims.

Here's one of his tunes I've always kind of dug:

Anything from the ten through Vitalogy era is going to be difficult for any singer to pull off.

I think what these two performance display is the power and emotion of pre 96 Ed vocals. There have been many singers with better technical skills. But only a few singers can combine that emotional edge with great talent And when its not "your song" - I would imagine its tough to get that level. Aaron Lewis did a great job with "Black" in terms of the emotional aspect of the song (though the performance ultimatley lacked).

I didn't see or hear anything wrong with that Corduroy performance, and it's my favourite PJ song. The only issue with the Chris Cornell one was that it was Cornell, and I'm kind of bored of grunge musicians doing each others' grunge songs.

He's also a frequent coverer of Just Breathe, so fingers crossed that it's not that.

it really didn't seem to have any emotional core to it that I was able to pick up. If someone played me that song and said he was covering one of pearl jam's greatest songs I'd wonder why anyone would care about it.

The vocals were too light...too flat... Its already been mentioned before but its worth repeating. The song needed to be arranged differently for the vocal performance to work.

Oh Fuck! It may be "Just Breathe"! That actually makes sense... but the mcCready aspect makes me think it may not be... What other options make sense?

The Roots are involved as well, so I'd wager it's not.

I dunno know why since they were obviously huge fans of the band and were not just there to sway awkwardly. I think I reckognized a few from "The Fixer" video.

But yeah, the audience was really funny.

I dug it. It was kinda nice to experience the music, and about 60% of the lyrics, separated from either the "weight of the world" quality of the studio version or the "we're older now but let's celebrate" surrealism of the live performances. Just a different color to look at, was all.

A few of the mopier lines played out a little awkward, though.
