I like it, particularly the title track and Revolution Blues, but I definitely think it pales in comparison to Neil's other 70s work. It's no Time Fades Away.

I mean, it's Neil, so it's good, but it's easily his weakest album of the 70's. I don't understand why everybody singles it out.

Because it's not

It's one of his best. It's a dark and broody record, 'Ambulance Blues' is easily one of his best ever tunes. 'On the Beach', 'Walk On', all great tracks.

A milestone record that should be listened along with 'tonight...' and 'time fades away'...

On the Beach is definitely one of my favourites. It would be hard to call it overrated since most people who aren't big Neil Young fans don't even know what it is.

It's overrated enough that people will say dumb shit like this...

I suspect it probably also has a weird cult status for people who grew up during the CD era due to its having been unavailable for so long (which doesn't explain why "Hawks and Doves" wouldn't have the same reputation, but oh well). I remember stumbling across petitions from time to time back in my early internet days where people were just rabid to have this thing released on CD.

It is one of my favorites though. Sonically, a lot of Neil's albums stick to a theme: His folkie/country side, the classic Crazy Horse four-piece sound, or whatever novelty sound any given record is indulging in. "On the Beach" is one of the few records that casts a wide net over Neil's stylistic range, and does so with some very good, very emotionally gripping songs. "American Stars N' Bars" is another one, though the overall tone of that record is quite different.

It seems Neil is at it again in Ireland.

Though it does admittedly seem odd that Neil rocking out with the Horse and then drenching the room in feedback would surprise anyone by now.

well, I was at the NY & Horse gig at the RDS.Dublin.
i've waited a few days to review it...the good and bad.

The Good...the songs.. the old and the new..the guitar playing...seein' the Horse for the 1st time ..amazing rawkerssss!!!

The Bad...why oh fuckin why did nearly every tune end with 10/15 mins of distortion/feedback..really no need for it..even the die hard long time fans were losing the will to live.

NY doing a great impersonation of Van Morrisson...totally ignored the crowd from start to finish who stood in the rain(monsoon conditions for a while) you'd have thought he'd least show his appreciation for that alone.

the Boo-ing and slow handclapping during the relentless wall of feedback we had to endure..although it was totally understandable, with people fucked off standing about in the rain waiting for a song.

played 3 big hits from a total number of 13 songs

18,000 at the gig...NY will be doin well to attract half that number if he ever visits these shores again...shame. the man and the Horse are magnificent..save the self indulgent shite for the studio or rehearsals...give the people who pay big money what they want to hear.

This is Neil. Thats why I think its great. You are getting all that is Neil. I wouldnt want just the hits unless he felt like playing them.

Im so surprised this is an issue still this day. Funny and totally incredible.

I last seen NY 3 years ago in Malahide castle,Dublin....ow that was a show...1st half was acoustic..2nd half he plugged ol black right in...i think many, if not all. expected the same thing on saturday night..sadly, not to be. at times, my 14 year old son could make the same fuckin racket Neil and Poncho were making ..it was that bad!!! hahaaa.....anyways...

ooh ..and he should hand the rights of "fuckin up" over to Pearl Jam...they do it much better and faster.

I bought the new album... lots of long songs with long jams
I bought a ticket for Chicago full on expecting long jams with tons of feedback...
saw the reviews for the first few shows, and knew thats what Id be getting.

At this point in his career? no one should be surprised that hes going to do what he wants to do.

and at this point on this tour with Crazy Horse... no one with internet capabilities should be surprised at what hes doing

Hey Mr Hendrix, could you stick to the verse/chorus/verse of Voodoo Child, we dont wanna hear a 10 min guitar solo / 2 min drum solo and your band slipping into Sunshine of Your Love near the end...

Yeah, this is kind of Crazy Horse's thing.

A hip-hop album from Neil Young would be surprising; long guitar solos and feedback jams are not. Hell, he put out a live record once entirely made up of feedback jams.

Neil released an entire album of "long feedback endings" and these dumb shits are surprised when he does it in person? Short setlists taken up by long jams with a lot of feedback at the end is a typical Neil & Crazy Horse set. Welcome to 1969, fuckheads!
