I dunno what the GOP is going to do. Geb could surpass Trump by next year. However, do they really want to try and put a 3rd Bush in office? Not sure who else is remotely qualified.

They need to stop harnessing crazy if they ever want to get their party back on track.

Jeb is actually the frontrunner in the GOP. When it gets right down to it, they'll have a hard time putting Trump against Hills. This has been the trend the last few election cycles for the GOP. It's crazy at first, then "electability" takes over.

It's a truly scary field. Bush seems the most... sane? Kasich too, but when your entire platform is perceived as anti-educator, you're going to be in deep trouble. I can't imagine that Cruz, Rubio or Walker will get any support from moderates. Paul is going to be seen as too out there, Christie comes off as too corrupt. It almost seems like Trump could win this thing (the republican nomination) and I bet he will get absolutely crushed in the general election.

Yeah. But, the Palin example does make sense. I think the real fear of Palin being a hospital visit from the Presidency is what cost (or helped cost) McCain the nod.

I feel as if Sarah Palin is patient zero in the tea party epidemic. There's always been crazies, but her nomination legitimized them. So naturally, "Trump for president" is an acceptable idea for many now. And it sucks. I'm very much a liberal, but the Democratic party is lame and that isn't likely to change if all they have to do is appear sane.

I get the electability angle. But this feels different. A guy like Santorum does well because he energizes a very specific, but unsustainable, element of the base. Sanders is probably doing the same. Ron Paul was able to also do it on a smaller scale. But those highly involved people were voting anyways, so despite winning primaries, there was no chance of them having an impact in the general election.

Trump is different, for the worse. He somehow is energizing the politically disintrested and angry to at least answer poll questions. If those people start showing up at primaries, we could all be in trouble.

And you know what scares me. I was talking to wife's uncle (orthopedic surgeon) and he was quite serious about rallying behind Trump would 100% vote for him. 70 + yo rich white guy...who feels like "i'm old, made my money, let's see what Trump can do"

At first I didn't think he was serious, but he was/is.

...yeah, consider me a little nervous.

I get all that, still glad Trump is running though. And no, I don't think he's going to shake things up in American government if elected. I'm saying he's "shaking it up" in terms of the campaign.

I'm thinking if elected, he'd be so bad that the Dems would take back over Congress, and he'd most likely be a one term president.

It's all about name recognition right now. Many of these early polls aren't even narrowing their field to likely primary voters and everybody has heard of Trump. That's a recipe for very early success. He'll flame out. Probably in spectacular fashion.

I think the best case scenario for Democrats would be if he hangs around until March or so and performs well enough that he actually believes he can run a viable 3rd party campaign against a moderate Republican and the Democratic nominee.

I just think that what's happen now actually means so very little. At this time two cycles ago, McCain was at the bottom of most polls. I think he was at like 5% in early August. Last cycle in early August Rick Perry was the talk of the GOP field.

I guess the one caveat is that maybe the GOP sees Hills as almost unbeatable and they are more willingly to throw anybody against her. So in that case, maybe Doofus McTrumpyPants makes sense. But I still can't see a scenario where he's the GOP candidate.

Nah, your first paragraph had it right, no caveat necessary. Trump has name recognition and even better he has diarrhea of the mouth and is the gift that keeps giving for the media. It's August. The GOP polls mean virtually nothing right now. Also, Hillary isn't close to unbeatable.
