Laicite and US conception of freedom of religion are pretty incompatible. The French concept of citizenship and US version similarly so.

Kinda weird that US lefties would choose this aspect of the French system to complain about. Allowing public space for Islam necessarily allows public space for that icky Christianity or equally icky Zionist positive Judaism.

Why not just embrace secularism in general? Suppress all public expressions of faith? Surely faith and ethnicity/ nationality are separable. Or....?
