Hi, my name is the Green Lantern. I have an all powerful ring. My special weakness is my the color yellow

Is his the color yellow different than everyone else's?

It's a long story but the yellow weakness is basically gone and it wasn't the color so much as what the color represented and it's relationship to the power battery. Green is will power....yellow is fear....a Green Lantern that can accept fear loses the vulnerability. It's all very deep.

violet = love
red = anger
orange = avarice
blue = hope
indigo = compassion

long ago the guardians of the galaxy showed emotions and felt it conflicted with their ability to make decisions. since then they have been agains showing any emotions and really abhor those who do (the earth bound lanterns usually act up the most when it comes to that). the originally hid parallax in green lantern on oa. parallax is the avatar of fear and that is why all green lanters could not affect the color yellow. but if you could overcome great fear then you could do it.

Avarice is pretty specific for guys who only know 7 emotions but don't count gas as one of them.

Isn't there some thing where GL has to be more creative for the power to work well? Like he can't just make a big green blob to cushion a crashing helicopter, he has to make a stupid roller coaster ramp?

It's all about the imagination...if you can imagine it the ring can create the construct

obviously there is a lot more to it than what i explained. i gave the very condensed version. it all works very well within the story and explained why Hal was able to overcome yellow and others were not.

A lot of these characters have been continually changing over the course of 50....60....70 years there are going to be good bits and bad bits. To focus on one characterization seems unfair if only because that idea was probably changed in a dozen ways over the years. Now if you think ring constructs are dumb well that's valid since it's inherent to Green Lantern but the yellow thing comes and goes and is more a product of the Silver Age. I love that stuff but I get why others would find it silly. It's like 50s Sci-Fi movies.
