Swallowed Whole is the far and away the worst song on LB. And Force of Nature is far and away the worst song on Backspacer. And it's only fractionally better than Habit. So, of those four:

Swallowed Whole
Force of Nature
Habit
Comatose

Interesting list. Not crazy about Comatose, and I can see the problem with Swallowed Whole, even if there are a few worse songs on the album. While Force Of Nature doesn't hold a candle to Habit, I think it's probably in my top three songs on Backspacer. Still surprised you think Big Wave, Speed Of Sound and Future Days are better songs than Habit.

Big Wave and Speed of Sound are great songs. GREAT songs. Probably not 5 star, top shelf PJ, but just outside. Future Days is a beautiful song that wears its heart on its sleeve. While I understand why a person wouldn't enjoy a song so saccharine and schmaltzy, it's at least honest. And there's nothing in Future Days as cheesy and unnecessary as Ed's fucking "child of the 90's" callback.

Pearl Jam fans are the worst.

I've heard thousands of albums. No Code is my favorite. I loved early Pearl Jam at the time, like I did with Soundgarden and Alice In Chains, but No Code made me the person that signs into RM in 2017. It's not perfect in every way, but as a complete work it is a masterpiece.

I haven't even listened to Lightning Bolt in the last year (or two). The difference to me is monumental.

No Code is a monster record. I totally agree. It's really something special. I will never take issue with any fan calling it PJ's best record.

Lightning Bolt certainly can't hold a candle to it. Not by a long shot. If you took Habit and I'm Open off of No Code, it would be my third favorite PJ record (Behind Vitalogy -- which is my second favorite album of all time -- and Riot Act).

I'm Open always makes my heart beat faster, probably more than any other Pearl Jam song. I can see why people would want to leave it off or replace it though. Not sure All Night would fit.

Most of this makes perfect sense to me. However I would rate Habit 4/5, and Speed Of Sound/Future Days 1. I'll give Big Wave a 2/3.

I always thought of Big Wave as the weak spot on S/T. Certainly far from the standards of No Code.
