I really enjoy Metallica. St . Anger was terrible but Death Magnetic was ok for what it was.

I was a big fan of the Load album back in the day.

I can't think of any album that I desperately tried to like more than Load.

Yes, same for me too, I hadn't ever really distinguished SOAD from any of those other bands.

Even bands with great riffs and tones, Neurosis and Yob and so on. The moment a dude starts screaming YAAAAAARGGGHHHHH I feel like breaking out in giggles. It's so comically absurd.

My music taste went from The Cure, Sonic Youth, Nirvana and Mudhoney (I actually wasn't as into Pearl Jam back in the day, that came later) straight to My Bloody Valentine, Smog, Cat Power, Yo La Tengo and so on. I dug into Sabbath, Zeppelin and AC/DC pretty concurrently with the latter stuff through cheap second-hand records.

I never liked Guns n' Roses, couldn't stomach Faith No More or Rage Against the Machine.

I'm quite fond of the first few Metallica albums but I didn't discover them until way after the fact, probably in the mid 2000s.

That therapist from SKOM worked with lots of bands during that early 90s period. Bon Jovi used him when they split from their management and JBJ wanted to self manage. There was a fascinating part of a Jovi doco that covered that time of the band. Maybe Bob Rock (who produced both bands) knew this guy from then.

I remember reading a Modern Drummer Lars article when the Black album was released and Lars said the reason for the simplifying of his beats was twofold. He was absolutely drained playing shows and needed some respite ( which a few of the older tracks and covers provided). Secondly and probably most importantly as it's happened with other bands, when you're playing stadiums and arenas a complex blast beat gets muddy, definition gets lost and the whole mix suffers. They were also after a change feeling that AJFA had taken them as far as possible down that track.

Def Leppard are another band who benefitted from a simpler drum track in a live environment. His playing had to adapt but their producer played a role in not only how his new approach to playing evolved, but how his kit was setup for a live environment. Arctic Monkeys would probably fit in that argument too. In the Queen Days Of Our Lives doco, Roger Taylor talks about the different style playing an arena to a club and that's how We Will Rock You happened.

I think I've never heard a Metallica song I enjoyed.

Metallica's first four albums are really good. I never really liked much after that, with the exception of a few songs here and there.

Death Magnetic is okay, but if you think Avocado is brickwalled, then wait till you hear Death Magnetic. Yikes!
