Ever see them before? They're great live, but it's been virtually the same tour/setlist combination since 2006... it's exhausting that they're rolling out this same 'circus sideshow' year after year.
How was it?
Couple times in the 90's, and then this was my 3rd show since '10... (Sacramento '10, opening night Reno '12, and last night. Reno '12 was probably the best. All 3 were solid though.
On one hand I agree with your set list complaint. But it's like the old Pearl Jam argument..... 30 songs digging deep in the vault with Ed fucking most of them up, or 15 standards done tight as fuck... I love each band for both styles. That's why I have shit tons of boot audio and video from each band
Yeah, but for 8 years?!
It's as not as though their setlist has remained literally exactly the same throughout that period, though.
For 8 years, the lighting/visuals have been different setup variations of the exact same thing, and the setlists have interchanged no more than 4-5 songs, and that's typically if they're playing the same city 2x. Don't get me wrong, it's bad ass, but I've seen it too many times now.

Yeah, they put on a great show, but you only need to see it once.

Was in Reno Monday night to see BTBAM/Deafheaven/Intronaut at the Knitting Factory. A bartender at Harrah's asked what my wife and I were doing in town, and we told him we were there for the show that night. He said "yesterday there were lots of people here for a concert - Tools was the name of the band I think."
i saw at least one person fall for it on facebook yesterday.

So I saw "Manhunter" last night followed by an interview / Q&A with Maynard. He mostly talked about the film specifically, but did talk about his various music projects including Tool briefly, but only when someone would ask a specific question. No new information other than him seeming increasingly frustrated with the slow process of making the new Tool album. When someone asked if Tool would consider making a concert video similar to Floyds "The Wall" he answered with "Well, if we could maybe finish the new album first then...yeah, we would consider it." Also with regards to the new album, he asked the audience "Do I seem like a lazy person? Than stop blaming me."
He gave some fascinating insights into his music making process and how it relates to the visuals in his live performances. Basically summarized - he pays a lot of attention to the pacing of things, not giving away too much too soon. He really lets Adam run the show when it comes to the music (something we already knew) and comes in after they have things composed to lay down vocals. He unabashedly called Adam a "control freak" when it comes to the process.
People asked a lot of questions about his favorite films and things like that. "Manhunter" was his first choice for the screening and is one of his favorites. He mentioned "The Exorcist", as well as film I've never heard of called "Bliss," and "Wings of Desire" among his favorites.
The interview was pretty cool, but from a Tool fans perspective there wasn't a whole lot of new information. I enjoyed the show and was glad I was there to see the man in person.
Sounds somewhat like Maynards laying the blame for this album taking so long square on Adam's shoulders

At this point, expectations of disappointment are creeping into my head.

It's a great balance of introspective, enigmatic Tool (Wings for Marie/10000 Days, Rosetta Stoned-Intension-Right in Two) and "Yes. Fuck yes." Tool (Vicarious, Jambi, The Pot).
Side note: The Pot may be at the top of my list of songs that have garnered my full support and endorsement without actually knowing what in the hell it's about. (I've never searched it out either, to be clear). Whatever he's pissed off about, I'm pissed off about, so I sure hope it's a good cause!

I always thought it was just about hypocrisy

It's been awhile, so I'm listening now for a refresher. Ok, it's pretty obvious it has something to do with hypocrisy and false judgement, but I have no idea what kangaroos have to do with it.

A kangaroo court is a judicial tribunal or assembly that blatantly disregards recognized standards of law or justice, and often carries little or no official standing in the territory within which it resides.
A kangaroo court is often held by a group or a community to give the appearance of a fair and just trial, even though the verdict has in reality already been decided before the trial has begun. Such courts typically take place in rural areas where legitimate law enforcement may be limited. The term may also apply to a court held by a legitimate judicial authority who intentionally disregards the court's legal or ethical obligations.
