@Brandi Carlile

I can't wait for you guys to hear this!
This is Pearl Jam's incredible cover of "Again Today".
This band is nothing short of sacred to me and the twins.
These guys are all incredible activists and total heroes of ours.
When Mike called me up on the phone and said that they were gonna do it in the style of the Ramones and Ed wanted me to sing the harmony the world stood still.
I LOVE THIS!

Doesn't that bold part sting a little bit, guys?
Absolutely not. Why would it?

Not to me. The influence is pretty clear.

I don't think it's that crazy of a method to find your way into a song.

Do you really think anyone in the band focuses on their stock portfolios? Pretend we're not on RM and answer that question.

Well, it's a cover song for a charity album. If you didn't already feel that way after Lightning Bolt I don't know why this is pushing you over the edge.

It's just lazy and creatively dead. If I were ever headed into the studio with a band and they said "Make us sound like X," I'd try to back out of the session.
I guess I don't see how having a specific vision or a sound in mind and entering into a creative endeavour that you aren't required to undertake is lazy. Seems like the opposite to me.

i am disappointed by that approach only because they chose The Ramones. But a 'lets sound like X' approach is just musical shorthand

And it shows vision and initiative.

Also, I'm pretty sure they've done it before. I can't think of specific examples but I'm sure I've heard them describe the process of writing or arranging older songs with "we were going for a (older artist) thing".

It's lazy when it's entirely dependent on someone else's aesthetic. I get the lines are blurred a bit with a covers record, and I should have allowed for that in my post. But still, it doesn't sit quite right with me given the other creative missteps.
Gotcha. Yeah, I guess it doesn't bother me as much as it does you. Especially since their version sounds so totally different from the original. Who produced this covers album? Did different people produce and/or mix each track?

I mean, isn't No Code their "Neil Young Record"? I feel like half the songs on that album were described as "we were going for a Neil Young thing."
