That sounds like an exaggeration of what McNear's article actually said, which was that he called the non-LP but shorter than average height producer of his podcast a word that's no longer PC for LPs.

Without knowing any of the story about him I thought he was pretty good hosting. Not the best, but acceptable. My guess is the biggest outrage is the perception that the fix was in and that the last 8 months was just a charade before he gave himself the job.

For a minute I thought they picked Michael Richards from Seinfeld, who also has a history of using problematic language.
