I would laugh, but, you're kinda right, and, that's probably a bit fucking pitiful, on all fronts

mm why do you think it is? I kinda feel is about politics
that's what I thought at first too. I'll come back to this after I give it some thought. The trigger moment was wondering if the 'she can fuck off' moment at the end was about death (which eddie personified as female in Comes then Goes) and then hearing some of the other imagery in a different context
Oooh I like where this is going. First question: what is Comes Then Goes about? I didn’t pick up on it being about death, although I can see where it touches on themes of ephemeralness.
Similarly, I don’t think Running is about death per se, but I do think the concept of running out of time is central to its theme. The impending end of life (Eddie’s own life or the world going to hell) is the driving force for the manic efforts and screaming and thrashing against it.
What I couldn’t place was how personal and specific some of the lines were. Like how could this not be about some specific individual or situation? So your idea that it’s death personified is really interesting.
Death is a shitty plumber.
'The Queen of Collections took your time' lyric is about death in Comes then Goes specifically, but the whole song seems to be grappling with loss and the gulf surrounding death

Ed has been obsessed with the same things for a lot longer than recently

Fucking fantastic...more of this, please. Not a full album of it, but, once in a while, maybe?
A. It was pretty much the last song where they sounded like they were actually having any fun and didn't have the sword of Damocles hanging over their heads
B. Introduced me to Johnny "Guitar" Watson's music, and, he's a bad summummabitch

Was cleared for
For liftoff
Aborted my
Takeoff
Living in the shadows
Crossing my fingers
A date with the gallows
And a reprieve not looking likely
I see this as the dark and hopeless companion to the following 7 o’clock lyrics
Saw the destination
Got so closed before it turned
Swim sideways from this undertow
And do not be deterred
I think both “segments” address some sort of statement about the current political/societal climate, one having a hopeful resolution to delayed progress, and the other almost seeming to be resigned to a lack thereof and even, eventual “defeat”.

I'm finding this song way more "fun" than Johnny Guitar but at the end of the day, your taste will govern what you find funner

Agreed. At the end of the day, we can't convince each other to like this song. I think it's catchy AF and love it.

Lots of speculation about this songs meaning. This song, as well as others on this record I'm sensing are a return to Ed's stream of consciousness style of writing. So yes I think this and 7oclock share a similar space. 7oclock is much more fleshed out. With Ed this can be both good and bad. Ed has a real knack for melody he really is one of the best ever when it comes to melody. Stream of consciousness allows for that artistic expression to really come through. The opposite approach of really having a particular point to get across and fit in a hole is often where he finds himself struggling as a song writer and where it gets clunky. He can really shine obviously when he is narrating a story to tell. This works best because he's not singing to someone or at someone.
All three styles can even show up in the same song . I'm guessing this happens for him when he really decides to lean into something. I'm just guessing but I would say Given to Fly started out as stream of consciousness and blossomed into a narrated story. The counter point maybe would be WWS where I'm guessing he knew exactly where he was going beforehand.
Running is him feeling like it is all going down the drain. Most of it probably comes just from that thought in his head and not alot more.

Running is better than Dark Matter.
This bridge makes you go, "The fuck?" in a wonderful way, while the Dark Matter bridge is a moment where, to its detriment, that song backs off.
