Despite advanced age, he looks strong and graceful and every bit the skilled knight he was in his youth. He remained a formidable fighter even in his advanced years, winning the championship of a tourney at King's Landing at the age of 57, and unhorsing Sandor Clegane in a tilt in the tourney on Prince Joffrey's name day, just a year prior to the outbreak of the War of the Five Kings.

The commander of the City Watch confronted me, emboldened by my empty scabbard, but he had only three men with him and I still had my knife.

Gregor THE MOUNTAIN Clegane



Head of House Clegane | Lannister bannerman | Likely Ser Robert Strong of King Tommen's Kingsguard - He is well known for his size, cruelty, and prowess in battle. Gregor is extremely tall (he is close to eight feet in height). He has "massive shoulders and arms thick as the trunk of small trees", and a voice like stone breaking. Gregor weighs over thirty stone (420 lbs), nearly all of it muscle, making him near inhumanly strong. Gregor's strength allows him to wield a six-foot, two-handed greatsword with just one hand, giving him enormous reach while still wielding a shield. Such is the power of Gregor's strength that he has been known to hack men in half with just a single blow.

No other knight in the realm inspires such terror in our enemies.

Super controversial, maybe. But I'm going Selmy.

I'm open to changing my vote if anyone can provide a decent argument, though.

Gregor is overrated. His size and strength are his greatest assets, along with his reputation. He likely wins a lot of fights on intimidation alone. Barristan wouldn't be cowed by his reputation. Barristan also doesn't wear a helmet during single combat, which provides an appetizing target for Gregor. Yet, much like when he killed Khrazz, I think he uses this to his advantage by baiting Gregor into focusing on his head, while patiently waiting for his opening to counter. The Mountain isn't known as a technically great swordsman, while Barristan is widely regarded as the greatest swordsman alive. I think he wins this fairly easily.

Aw man. Great point about Selmy's no-helmet tactic. He's going to be a lot faster than Gregor as well.
