Having heard BO'B's piano on these other songs, which is ultimately pretty tasteful, I guess I wonder if he might do OK on the FD studio version. But if so, why does the Wrigley piano not even sound like a piano? It sounds like a music box or something.

worst case scenario, if the piano is horrible, i'll trim it off. or fade it right the fuck out.

I enjoy the Ed only version much more as well. After hearing the studio version of Lightning Bolt, I'm pretty excited to hear Future Days now.

So I put on Sirens, Getaway, Lightning Bolt, Mind Your Manners, Let the Records Play and Swallowed Whole - the songs we have virtually complete sounds for, and came to a realization - that Pearl Jam is going for broke All That You Can't Leave Behind style. The production is so huge that each of these songs could be stadium ready in an instant. I happen to think that it has been coming out real well and they are good at this, but I am relatively convinced on these songs that they are at least trying to go big and epic, and this might be more of a commercially successful album that we are used to. I know there have been all sorts of wonky comparisons, but the closest thing I can think of, taken together, is U2 going for broke but certainly sounding very Pearl Jam in doing so.

Put me somewhere in that camp too. I wouldn't say I don't like it. I ADORE the mood it sets, the great production, the intent (that truly does come across), and the technical and creative chops it took to come up with the tunes. But few of these songs actually get me as high or as low as anything anything else this band has released.

I don't think it's a highs and lows record, it's more of a tempered mood than that, but it's a stunningly crafted thing to listen to.

It sounds really nice but the climax happens in the first track and even that track doesn't climax. Musically it is pretty well crafted but Ed really mails it in. His approach isn't moody or restrained it is just boring.

I don't hate it by any means but it is below average.

It's moody, restrained, bored, all of those things... deliberately. It's a stoner rock record, not a climax record. The mood is perfect, since it was written off the back of Roskilde.

Anyway, I've talked about this a million times.

I wonder if anyone who loves Riot Act actually likes this new stuff or I'm on my own.

I don't know if I *love* Riot Act, but I do really like it.

The only songs I skip are Ghost and Green Disease, and maybe Bu$hleaguer.

But I'm adoring all of the LB tracks so far.

I'm about to compare 2 different albums here, so I hope it makes sense, but I don't hear thin production in MYM. I hear thin production in Got Some. I think MYM holds up fine coming out of Getaway.

I feel like this record is like me and my (imaginary) wife having mindblowing sex after I had given up hope that we'd ever have mindblowing sex again after she read me the Riot Act. Sure, the sex has been ok since then, though sparse, and even bad sex with her is better than good sex with most, but, fuck, she's blowing my mind lately.

Interesting comment from the Pit: "All the songs we heard so far are about a "inner revelation". (Maybe that is why LB is the title track?) IN LB it is someone who enters your life, in MYM it is about seeking truth in yourself and not in (religious or normative) institutions, and we can even put FD and the theme of SBM (Uke version) in this light."

I'm about to compare 2 different albums here, so I hope it makes sense, but I don't hear thin production in MYM. I hear thin production in Got Some. I think MYM holds up fine coming out of Getaway.

The problem is that you're comparing it to other albums. I think MYM has a thicker and more interesting production than some (not all) of Backspacer but alongside these other Lightning Bolt tracks it sounds squashed and tinny. They are definitely more organic and big-sounding. MYM sounds like RVM played from a phone speaker.
