If the sirens are ambulance sirens, then your smoking / drinking / generally being an ass might make the second verse make sense. But "If you choose to stay, I'll wait, I'll understand..." Ugh. The perfect video after the MYM one. Man, I didn't want to be wishing we'd had something different, but I'd have loved a similar visual style.stupidmop wrote:A film noir tragedy would have made a hilarious juxtaposition with the song but an entertaining video.harmless wrote:Yeah, I have considered that. They should have gone lo-fi and 80s with really bad sets and lots of neon and a smoke machine. Would have been amazingly awful.

Should've gone with a hotel room, with some gunman hiding out with his wife and small child, peering through the curtains to the cop cars screeching below.

Re: New Song (9.19.13): Sirens
Too literal.
I still wish this song referred to the Sirens of Greek mythology. Or the ones featured in Ulysses.
It's called sirens, he mentions them a few times but doesn't really make any real use of the image or what they represent. Bit of a disconnect there, ed.

The sirens are obviously police / ambulance / emergency sirens of some kind. I dropped the greek mythology possibility as soon as I'd heard the song for the first time. The song is about threat and death and the sirens represent that.

It'd be good to know if the inventor of the siren called it after the Greek harpies.

Somehow didn't spot Spenno's post before, but this is a real possibility.cutuphalfdead wrote:My dad died of a heart attack before his 64th birthday. I think the Sirens are the groupies that Ed finally slept with and now he knows he made a mistake.

Yeah. I don't know, I thought about that too. The sirens are coming for me, it's a bit like my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard. The second verse could be about Ed cheating and his wife forgiving him, and if she choose to stay, he'll wait for her anger to subside. But I don't know, this makes Ed sound like a philanderer and a bit of a jerk.stip wrote:maybe they are also about temptation. that way the verse that doesn't make sense can make sense!

Maybe the Sirens refer to how you guys keep listening to this song even though you know you shouldn't, while some of us are staying firmly tied to the mast.stip wrote:maybe they are also about temptation. that way the verse that doesn't make sense can make sense!

Maybe that's why this song follows 'My Father's Son', with the sperm bottle and everything.stip wrote:if they gave him an STD all interpretations converge!Harry Lime wrote:harmless wrote:The sirens are obviously police / ambulance / emergency sirens of some kind. The end/sirens both seem to be about illness leading to death. And the fear of losing what you treasure most.
The next song is my fathers son?
Didn't eds father die of MS?
