How come? And honest question, no banter bullshit involved here.

i was gonna ask if its because you couldnt by some reason dare rank an album from an aging band three decades into their career against their work during their peak cultural revolution period, but then you did talk about how you love Costello's more recent work the best.

Do you legit just think its not as good and never will be compared to main run of albums? Does it have anything to do with you just generally having tastes that have moved beyond rock music?

Can I judge it objectively? can you? Does it even need to be....

Whats the point of anything? How are babies made?

Ok. So here’s the most accurate list I can possibly do. The top eight are all magical. Eight of my favorite albums of all time. I can see Gigaton rising way up the list. The lowest I can imagine it ever being is eighth. Avocado is miles better than Backspacer and Lightning Bolt, but it doesn’t compare to the elite eight. Better production definitely would’ve helped. Including songs like 10 Billion Years, Let it Ride, and Cold Confession could’ve lifted it into the top level.

04. Vitalogy
05. No Code
06. Ten
07. Gigaton
08. Riot Act

09. Pearl Jam

Gigaton is easily better than the bolt and backspacer.

its fighting for attention with S/T. Riot Act maybe but that record was my savior for the time it was released. So that might be hard, though i can recognize a lot of duds on that record these days.

Ten is a difficult one to rank due to its place in rock history and my childhood but when was the last time i ever said "Oh i should listen to Ten"

So, Gigaton has legs.

I feel similarly, especially about Ten. I have no idea where to place it. I’m completely in love with new album though. And these songs keep revealing more and getting better on every listen. I literally haven’t felt this way about a new PJ album 20 years. It’s amazing.

In reality, if Gigaton were named Yield and released in '98 it would be top 5 in just about every real ranking right now. Deep down I think many of us know that Gigaton is pretty rare for having so few skippable songs (for me the only other would be Yield). So that's the music. And would anyone say Gigaton is not the best (by far almost) lyrically?

By the way, another thing they finally got right with Gigaton: the pink floyd influence. I remember a few of them say in interviews from the past that pink floyd is what they were going for with NAIS and Sirens. On Gigaton there are genuine pink floyd moments.

Couldn’t agree more. I won’t hesitate to move this up. I’ve listened 3+ times so far today. Great every time.

It's kinda like the judges giving long time fighting champs the nod in draws or even close defeats.

Binaural is one of my 2 favorite albums and probably my favorite pj album lyrically but i have to admit i think LB is pretty good lyrically. I honestly can't imagine gigaton being "by far better lyrically" than binaural. I also cant see how they could miss the mark so much if they were trying to sound like pink floyd with Sirens lol.

What if you ranked how You felt about them in their first month of release? The immediate feeling of love or disappointment or whatever in its time.

1) Ten - This album has changed my life.
2) Vitalogy - This is the greatest band of all time!
3) Yield - Oh thank God, they still know how to be a rock band!
4) Gigaton - Holy shit! I didn’t think they still had it in them. Should I get a tattoo?
5) Vs. - This is as amazing as I thought it would be.
6) Avocado- A return to form!
7) Backspacer - Hey, this is kind of fun!
8) Binaural - This is Pearl Jam now, I guess. Moody bastards tricked me with the Letterman appearance.
9) No Code - Wtf is this?
10) Riot Act - Well, there’s a handful of songs I really like, I guess.
11) Lightning Bolt - They have families now.

Man, I don't know. as somebody who likes Binaural and Riot Act a lot less than most of you (and even Yield for that matter) I think this is competing for a spot in the top 5. Which I NEVER would have expected.

Its definitely better than LB and Backspacer and I like it much better than Binaural and Riot Act even if most like those albums, and I think I like it more than Yield even.

Im sure my rankings change a lot, but Ten/Vs/Vitalogy are always in the top somewhere, I really like no Code too, and I like self/titled a lot....I think Gigaton will be in there

Hard to rank, so I'll just list:
1. Ten - wtf is this? (grew into complete love in the long run)
2. Vs. - the greatest band
3. Vitalogy - cool album, a bit uneven
4. No Code - first two days: wtf is this? after a month: fantastic album (now favorite album)
5. Yield - another excellent album, but possibly their 5th best
6. Binaural - first two days: oh no, NAIS is by far the best song. after a month: this might be their best album
7. Riot Act - disappointed (didn't last long, started loving it some months in)
8. S/T - that artwork? ugh that production? ugh. Solid effort, but probably not better than Riot Act
9. Backspacer - disappointed
10. Lightning Bolt - this is pretty good (this fell a bit)
11. Gigaton - great album, competing with S/T for the best of the independent era

Obvious post is obvious but: Newalbumitis is always an issue; this married to the fact that many of the albums Ten-RA are associated with personal life events of people mean that it'll be difficult for Gigaton to break through. It'll be interesting to see where it sits in about a year's time.

For me, it aint going to break through the first 6, but it has a chance of supplanting Riot Act (which is an achievement itself). All I was looking for was a worthy addition to the canon, and I got that in spades

I have no issues ranking this just below the top tier of PJ albums. Basically, I consider Vitalogy, Ten and Vs as the top 3 (in that order) and those are almost set in stone.

The next 3 are Yield, No Code and Gigaton (not in any particular order). At this time, I would listen to Gigaton over the other two, No Code I generally listen to the least but appreciate what they were trying on it. Yield has some GREAT songs but I never considered it a great album front-back. Gigaton is more solid as an album and has as many great songs as Yield (if not more), just doesn't yet have the same nostalgic value. It could settle above or below Yield eventually.

Binaural and Riot Act have never been top albums for me, I find the rockers on these to mostly be far from memorable. S/T I would place above these two but it hasn't aged as well. So these three are basically in the same tier with no particular standout.

Backspacer and LB I both liked a lot when they came out but there's little to discover on these with repeated listens and eventually they settled at the bottom tier, not that I dislike either album.

One of the reasons this one may stick is that there is a pretty decent chance it will be indelibly etched to this moment, and an important part if how some people coped.
