around the sun and reveal are probably the closest to teetering on sucking

Yeah. They were right there but never fully plunged into suck like another band we all know.

Imitation of Life alone pulls it out of suck territory.

I guess it depends on how many good songs it takes to keep an album from sucking. I like three songs on the album. I love one of those. If that's enough then I'll take back what I said. But I never want to listen to the record, only those songs I like.

So that's two songs. The album doesn't suck.

The Lifting
I've Been High
Imitation of Life
I'll Take the Rain

I love those 4, so I can't say the album as a whole sucks. But the rest of the songs are decidedly average by R.E.M. standards.

I know the band rag on Around The Sun quite a bit, and I agree that they probably messed with it too much...but I can't help loving it for some reason. The last few songs absolutely suck balls, but it also has:

Electron Blue
The Outsiders
Final Straw
I Wanted To Be Wrong
Boy In The Well
Aftermath

Those are top notch songs for me, so I think I rank ATS higher than Reveal.

Monster remix is pretty cool, I'm digging the extra reverb on I Took Your Name, and I love what they've done with Crush With Eyeliner.

Again, it just depends on how you want to define it. Three songs is a quarter of the record. If 3/4 of the thing is bad to unlistenable, I'd still say the record sucks. If one or two songs is good enough for you, then there you go.

Reveal has some great songs that suffer from overly polished production work. I would love a Reveal Naked.
