They are good. For the first time yesterday I gave all of these a listen in semi-cronalogical order, and was completely engrosed the whole time

Someone needs to find the rest of the songs so I know once and for all how I feel about this thing. The great music, mixed with the poop of Bob Rock... I mean Brendan O'Brien. I don't know.

Got to talking about Pearl Jam with my supervisor the other day when Given to Fly came on pandora. She's pretty much a "casual" fan but owns all the albums through Riot Act... Says she doesn't really listen to much since Yield.

Anyways last night, I played the six songs without telling her what it was or anything. Her immediate reaction after the vocals came in on Getaway was "I'm glad Pearl Jam has managed to write new music and still sound like the same band after all these years."

After Sirens and lightning bolt - "when's this coming out I'm gonna definitely gonna pick it up"

Swallowed Whole - "can you burn me a copy of this!?!"

Her comments made me realize we're all way to boxed up in Pearl Jam fan land to really appreciate how fucking good they are.

Awesome post. Can't agree more. It's when you go out of PJ land when you truly realize how good they are (at the same time, you also realize they aren't the best band ever). When you get that distance, and it usually happens by listening to lots of other types of music and engrossing yourself in it, go to other band aor music message boards and get lost in it completely outside of PJ, that you come back and go, "damn, there's very few bands like this." That put out consistently awesome (all though hardly ever classic "masterpieces" if there are such things anymore) albums. Not a bad one in the bunch (a few that are subpar by their own high standards). This is a quality band, folks. You're not wasting your time with these chaps, but it's certainly good to get out and explore and realize that although you'll find some unbelievably great music out there (some of which is better than PJ in short spurts), no one gives you this sort of experience and with such consistency.

I think there are people rejecting the new stuff because their music taste *is* so diverse, actually. It can't be argued that people hate the new stuff because they don't listen to anything else.

Only one of my friends listens to rock and he is a fellow PJ fan. The rest are dub steppin or rapping.

All of my friends (apart from my wife) who loved PJ think they've sucked since Yield.

To be fair, there was a pretty huge drop-off in the consistency of their work from then on.

I like them but I still think they're flawed records, particularly in comparison to the Ten-Yield stretch which is uniformly great.

Same here, well they all listen to some sort of rock but mostly hipster indie bands....The only issue i have so far with these new songs is that Eddie is too prominent in the recording...I have hard time picking up the instruments even with my headphones on except during the solos obviously......Jeff needs to be more upfront IMO...Hes an underrated bass player and lays down some killer shiz...Im hoping its just the quality of the recording but some of the new stuff is little too lyrical for me i.e Lightning Bolt, Swallowed Hole...Thats my one and only issue, otherwise i think all of the tunes are good and i bet we havent heard the best songs off of LB yet...

Really? must be my poor quality headphones and playing it thru my ipod cassette/car adapter....I need to get a new pair for the album release...I had a pair of Bose AE2 but they were stolen..

I wish there was more of what sounds like fretless bass in Sirens. And I also think the bass is all but absent from MYM.
