It’s weird how people think that a violent movie is ok, but that altering footage from the same movie to shape a memetic fantasy about a bloodbath of real people is somehow not cool.

To be clear, I think the video is like super, super dumb, and the organization that hosted the event it was shown at has had Roger Stone and Don Jr as keynote speakers, so it’s basically grown man daycare.

The existence of the video though, and its prolonged appreciation within that circle, is just another example of the right’s fetishizing of the feeling of victory over those who disagree with them to the point of dehumanizing anyone who is not them

And there’s no version of this world where I don’t think that you are forcing that association out of ideological, defensive need.

Picture members of antifa sharing it gleefully, months after Fox News was the recipient of multiple bomb threats. Really imagine that. While President Hillary Clinton was daily telling her frothing supporters that conservative media was the enemy of the people. And there is that famous handwaving I've come to expect: "that was just a dumb movie! This is IMPORTANT!"

I can see how you would think this is more important after years now of heavy doses of brainwashing to believe that we are surrounded by literal Nazis and that even the slightest hint of danger in art will translate into some incel shooting up a school. You are probably too far gone to help.

But I assure you, a few boomers laughing about this scene being turned around on the type of people who made it is no worse than the premiere cultural exporter in the world demonizing southern churchgoers.

Apply your hypothetical to yourself, and I imagine you'd be shrugging that it's no big deal.

The right certainly played that up to the fullest, though in my opinion it mostly just illustrates the hypocrisy of the left saying the right is the sole promoter of violence (if you can even call it that) against the other side.

I don't remember if I thought Griffin's stunt was dangerous or not at the time (it certainly seems silly to me now), but if calling me a hypocrite about it would allow people to move on to arguing the point I'm making, I'll accept the label.

Lately, I see these things as symptoms of increasing division, not drivers of it, but I guess that's the age old question about whether life imitates art or vice versa.
