Josh Evans talks about starting this record in januari 2017. In their own GT studios (Warehouse). CDM was released about a year later in march 2018 citing BO'B as a producer. So somewhere along the line Josh became the producer. Im really curious about the timeline here. What was already recorded with BO'B before march 2018? It seems that only 1 or 2 (retrogade was mentioned) come from BO'B helmed sessions. What happened with BO'B? Everyone assumes the band stopped working with him. However it seems that he hasn''t produced any records since 2017!! He did the Prophets of Rage one and a Mastodon record, and that's it for the last 3 years!

I feel it’s an album born of desperation, in so many ways.

Subject matter, personal/band relationships, tragedy, career trajectory, ever receding hairlines, mortality, touring keyboard player, Greek stalker, fear of failure and a fast acceleration of age.

It’s a perfect storm and god bless the person(s) who recognised this and put a stop to the utter shit they had been laying down. I suspect we’ll never know how the ship eventually found a course. Cue the LBC metaphors, but it really is a complete turnaround in form.

Lazy fucking bastards. Shame on them for wasting so many years. I love them but they need to be called out equally as much as they’re praised for this beautiful output.

Oh fuck, the ‘Pit’ is about to make us all hate this album...

I now feel as if Backspacer and Lightning Bolt kind of represent an experiment to work through "new" parts and elements to a maturer sound, rather than a whole Pearl Jam; they play around (with mixed success) with fun and brightness, "friendliness" instead of bleakness, pop elements in the production and instrumentation; those elements don't start to become fully integrated into a complete PJ sound until this album, which sprinkles those into what we knew and loved about them before

If you read a lot about the creative process, you so often hear about a band sprinkling in different elements over the course of a couple of records in an attempt to creatively stretch and expand; some things that work, others that don't, but, you invariably get that album every few records where the reviewer will make some kind of cliched comment about all of the ingredients & experiments over the past few albums coalescing into a cohesive whole; I specifically recall that being said about Riot Act.

Seems like that's the case here. Can't wait to find out tomorrow.
