Reading through the liner notes...Jeff plays 6 different instruments on this album. Versatility.

He does. And there's at least one other song with "deestance," but someone the other day said, "There must be some inside joke" about it, so there's probably at least one other "eenstance" of it.

Saucy! Pray-tell....Anything to do with an ongoing lawsuit between a band & a widow?
It's just my theory from the snippets i've read. Timelines make sense. It's been stated that one of the parties wanted BO'B specifically as producer of the next SG album, a view that wasn't shared by 3 other members. Again, it's out there. It may come down to conflict of interest.
You're probably right...

Hadn't thought much about it. I'd prefer to be optimistic and stay ignorant in my bubble, believing that the band finally got wise and realized that he hasn't been a decent producer in two decades.

He's a coat-tail rider who constantly breaks the cardinal producer's rule: He's the insufferable type of producer who refers to the band as we, as though he's actually a member of the band he is producing instead of an admittedly talented, though ultimately failed, musician who fell into the job. Listen to interviews for the tell-tale signs; you'll hear gems like, "on this album, WE tried to", "WE were going for." It's unbearable to me.

Just do the job, make the actual BAND shine, instead of trying to impose your way into it. Just take your producer's points and go home.

Lest anyone thing I'm being harsh, he's been doing it since early on....check the credits on the Black Crowe's debut. The guy played a ton of instruments on there.

I agree with this. Im sure everything thats happening between Soundgarden and Vicky Cornell has something to do with PJ not doing more stuff with Brendan...and if they ditched the other supposed album they had, it might also be because they wanted to go on a different route all together...but the timeline that Josh talks about its a weird one...Maybe once Matt knew about him trying to be on the SG album he talked to the band ? But im sure the vicky cornell stuff has something to do with it.

And yeah, the guy had an amazing run in the 90s and was so important to many other bands...STP, for example.

Isn't there a legal case happening currently that relates to this?

My (very very) limited understanding of it is: there are a bunch of half-finished Soundgarden demos with Chris Cornell vocals on them. The guys want to put them together as a final SG album. Vicky Cornell will only allow this to happen if they use Brendan O'Brien as a producer, which the rest of the band doesn't want to do for some reason. The theory is that this somehow affected Pearl Jam's relationship with BO'B or, at the very least, BO'B's relationship with Matt

A Soundgarden fan will be able to explain better but I think that's roughly what's going on

If true, I'm glad they all respected Matt's decision/wishes.

I think the band wants to work with Adam Kasper. He is tight with those guys.

BoB might have fucked up Gigaton a little but there were some unique events that inspired the music this time around, referenced in the lyrics, and I think the Backspacer/LB approach just would have seemed a little too half-baked for expressing the content in the Gigaton songs, and capturing what they are now capable of doing in the studio. Not taking anything away from Josh; I hope they work with him again. But this album is relevant for reasons beyond what a producer can add.

But what about what a producer can take away?

I'm not invalidating your Cornell comments in this post by not including them, I'm just personally not cool travelling down that road right now, as I'm not studied up on enough of the aspects of the case to be capable of making educated comments.

As for B'oB, a ton of "ink" has been spent on this site about him over the years, in every conceivable thread, so I feel no guilt carrying on about him in this one:

He has been a part of some great records, and definitely deserves credit where credit is due, though it could be argued in STPs case that he was more of a recording engineer than producer, since the Deleo brothers have been insanely capable of shaping their own sound and working the boards going back to to Purple.

In the case of Rage Against the Machine, he produced, alongside the band, some of the earliest examples of what is now known as the "loudness wars", squashing dynamic range and instrumental separation to within an inch of it's life. Interesting to note that he had nothing whatsoever to do with their debut, which is inarguably their greatest-sounding record.

At this point, I'm admittedly picking nits. I adore the sound of everything he's done with Pearl Jam up through Yield, so, I do want to be fair here. He has done some phenomenal work and has carved out an enviable career. I take issue more with his processes and approach more than anything else.

Yeah I think BoB would have fucked it up a bit.

I'm going to need a Gigaton shirt. The few on pj.com aren't doing it for me. Though I do like the most recent Halloween shirt.

Black is fine as long as it's got something cool on it.
