I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. I spent most of my youth listening to bad drum sounds. It was fine.tragabigzanda wrote:you all-time worst takeMcParadigm wrote:for the love of god can we please start banning people for pretending that drum sounds matter

OR instead of banning people, we make official RM t-shirts that say "Drum Sounds Matter"

Re: 12th album rumors and speculation
maybe Andrew Watt told Matt Cameron to ‘bring his drum set’ simply because Watt doesn’t have one

Fully capable of enjoying a well written and well played record where the drums were recorded with a single poorly placed SM-57, yes.tragabigzanda wrote:and look at you now!McParadigm wrote:I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. Not they, Mike. And he always sounds excited. If Stone does press and sounds legitimately pumped, we may have something.joostone wrote:True, but they never sound this excited. Well, Im just excited about the process Mike describes here and thee fact that Matt is giving 110%liebzz wrote:I mean, this is very typical things they say before an album comes out. I can too. That doesn't mean drum sounds "don't matter," it means they're not all that matters.McParadigm wrote:Fully capable of enjoying a well written and well played record where the drums were recorded with a single poorly placed SM-57, yes.tragabigzanda wrote:and look at you now!McParadigm wrote:I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. And I get the feeling that the bad drum sounds we're discussing here aren't the lo-fi kind, but the sleek, plasticky, stripped of grit or character kind. Just like a different guitar tone can radically alter the impact or emotional color of a song, the nuances and sonic characteristics of a drum kit can make a huge difference. To say drum sounds don't matter is like saying the shade of color used in a painting doesn't matter. Why season your meal for enjoyment when what's important for sustenance is the caloric intake?

Re: 12th album rumors and speculation
I mean it’s not like he said “they have the same production aesthetic.”
The guys just like to have someone in the room who will give them a bit of direction. In this case, it sounds like the emphasis was on performance rather than pop songwriting.

Re: 12th album rumors and speculation
Every bit of news about this record makes it sounds worse.
It doesn't help that everything I've heard that 'Watt' has worked on sounds awful.
I will listen to it with an open mind but my expectations are not high.
That said, I think Gigaton is as close as we're going to get to a modern Pearl Jam record made the way I'd prefer (no overbearing external involvement, the guys just meandering around and exploring their sound, relatively natural sounding) and I didn't much like that either.
