Back in 2016, I attended a show by one of my favorite local musicians. The show had special significance for me (mostly related to personal circumstances surrounding the event), so I got my hands on a flyer for the event and had it framed. It hangs in my living room. The image prominently features this musician, whom I've been a fan of for a long time. Over the last year, I've had the pleasure of becoming friends with this musician, and we've hung out socially several times. I've even been to her house on more than one occasion.

She's about to attend a get-together at my apartment next week, her first time visiting my place. Should I remove the poster and replace it with something else? She knows I'm a fan (it's how we met), but I don't know if she'll be weirded out or uncomfortable by seeing a picture of herself hanging in my living room. I've asked several people and gotten mixed responses, so I turn to you, RM.

I thought this was going to be a story about the time you went to a show and someone pissed in your convertible.

Unless you have reason to question your own motives re: the friendship prior to this impending event, then no. In any meaningful friendship, you should strive to be your authentic self, and your authentic self has this framed memorabilia because you’re a fan of her art.

For you to remove the art would be negating your true self in hopes of honoring some perceived sense of potential discomfort on her part. You’d be conducting a transaction to advance the friendship, rather than simply being yourself and letting things fall where they may.

Also, if Neko Case ever visits my house, there is no way I'm taking down the setlist and flyer from her concert I have hanging in my office.

But also it depends on the kind of head you have on your shoulders these days. If you're gonna be weird about it and can't help it, take it down. If you feel more comfortable as the evening progresses you can make a talking point out of it and hang it back up, in a sort of ceremonial way. It can be endearing to open up about your neuroses to your new friends, if done the right way. Artists tend to be neurotic so she'll probably relate.
