1st degree murder.

I disagree. I'd love for this motherfucker to go to jail for life but second degree murder would require that they prove he intended to kill Floyd, even if it wasn't premeditated. That seems much harder to prove and could result in exoneration. The case for murder 3 otoh seems open and shut.

Now they’ve discovered the two of them used to work together at some nightclub. Perhaps the cop was disgruntled and had some beef with him.

Maybe! I personally doubt it, but that's also why I think murder three is the right charge. It's easy enough to prove that the cop caused his death, even if intentionally. It's harder to prove anything beyond that, and I do think overshooting the indictment would be a huge fuckup. Like, if you want to see shit burn down...

I agree with you in principle. But then I watch documentaries and see that some states are so loose with what premeditation is that they'll allow 1st degree charges if there was time, however brief, to reflect on what you were doing. Missouri gave the death penalty to a guy that was clearly out of his mind on drugs and killed a family member in the middle of a party (clearly not premeditated according to witnesses) but because he had to pump the shotgun the DA successfully argued that the time it took to do that represented "cool reflection" on what he was doing, therefore it's murder 1. (I'll give you two guesses on the race of the defendant and the DA but you'll only need one.)

Just so you don't misunderstand me, what I just described is a grave miscarriage of justice and I don't think that SHOULD be a legal standard for premeditation, I'm just pointing out that if they were charging Floyd with a crime for killing a person the way he was killed it wouldn't be at all surprising if they went for murder 1. At least in some states.

i have been so busy but i read what i think was a reasonably comprehensive article and i saw the picture and then cried momentarily and i am totally fine with the police station where he worked being burnt to the ground as a symbol of protest

i dont support additional violence against people

but fine with the building being reduced to ash as a symbol of justice
