There's definitely a pretentious and cynical side of me that wants to believe the only reason people love that record is because they were told to. And, as you say, its place in history.
But that's not true or fair. I just think ultimately sometimes things click. And sometimes they find you over time. Kid A still hasn't clicked for me. I'm guessing at this point it never will. It's cool, the band have a ton of great music that I can and do appreciate. I still think they're one of the best bands of all time, just not maybe for some of the same reasons others do.
i hear what you are saying, but i look at it a little differently. i was like 16-17 when kid a and amnesiac came out. these albums kicked the shit out of me. i already loved radiohead, but these releases being so close together and out of left field really made them feel important in the moment. and honestly it still holds up, i listened to idioteque earlier today. i know its a favorite in 'best of' lists, but people like me are partly to blame for that.
Amnesiac totally clicks for me and has since first listen. I really love that album.
i liked amnesiac more when it was released. its funny b/c as great as "everything in its right place" is as a song by itself an the opening song to kid a, 'pact like sardines' was the song that i was hooked on for a long time when it was first released. 'knives out' still owns me, i'll love those drums forever.
'i might be wrong: live recordings' is amazing. i think every song is better on this recording than the album, but i think that about a lot of music. 'the national anthem'>'i might be wrong' is just a powerhouse of weird funkiness. i also think this is the first time i heard 'true love waits'

I have a bunch of Radiohead mp3’s and they are all attributed to albums, but I bet at least 1/3 of them are set with the wrong album

My biggest criticism is using phrases like “dreamy rock” and “electronic tinkering” (references like this are so lazy and dismissive) to differentiate OK and Kid A, when in fact Ok had just about the same amount of “electronic tinkering.” They’d been doing that for awhile.

The Morning Bell (In The Dark Version) [2:00]
