Way back I picked-up Grendel: Red, White, & Black from Barnes & Noble. Enjoyed it (primarily the art) but never went further so some 25+ years later I am starting at the beginning with Devil by the Deed.

Are you doing the “deluxe” version he put out a year or two back?

Indeed, billed the Master's Edition. I guess it does expand well outside the original story. It looks tremendous plus the character has 40+ years of evolution to look forward.

Other than the Red, White & Black, have you read any Grendel before?

Man, you really need to do it all. It seems daunting, but it’s really not that bad. Maybe 100 issues total give or take. And DO NOT skip the two crossovers with Batman or the one with the Shadow. The latest mini-series is due out next month, IIRC.

You should look for the Omnibuses. They don’t have the updated DBTD or the crossovers, but do have everything up to the latest series. And it’s all chronological.

Grendel made me a huge Matt Wagner fan. Batman/Grendel specifically. Anytime he comes back to it, it’s a treat.

Interestingly, when my cousin and I were trying to break in to comics (him penciller, me inker) we put together some pages of what if Grendel was hired to kill Bruce Banner.

Grendel Omnibus Volume One was awesome

Will definitely move on to Volume Two but I may actually start The Walking Dead for a few issues and see if it takes.

Still plugging through Zenescope's Alice in Wonderland bonkers saga and enjoying it as well.

Have always had Swamp Thing on the list but haven't sat down with it just yet, saw #1 is hitting shelves now and thought it was petty cool:

In 2025, during New York Comic Con, it was announced that Veitch's final four issues of Swamp Thing would be published in 2026 under DC's Black Label imprint. The mini-series will be titled Swamp Thing 1989 and run as #1-4, but the cover images will continue the numbering of where Veitch left off, #88-91.

Gerry Conway died a few days ago. All of us that still enjoy superhero comics owe him thanks. Comics wouldn’t be the same without him.

Just read the first issue of a new series from Image called Of The Earth. Part horror, part noir. Very interesting. By Chris Condon and Charlie Adlard. Will certainly stick around for the rest.

For those that enjoyed the Claremont/Byrne run on X-Men, there is some kinda-new Byrne X-Men coming starting next year. Back a few years ago, Byrne started having ideas of where the story would go had Jean not died in UXM 137 as per the original plan. He then started pencilling them and the story just kept going until he had like 32 issues completed. He would put each issue out monthly as fan fic on his website. Marvel heard about it and liked it and reached out about publishing it but they couldn’t come to terms. I don’t remember why, but he stopped with the 32nd issue. So they’ve just been sitting there on his site ever since.

It was announced yesterday that they were going to be published as 3 hardcover volumes beginning in April. Byrne will be inking about half of it and others will ink the other half. Very excited. I’ve read them all in pencil form more than once and it truly is some of the best work of his career. Can’t wait to see full finished work on them.

Just an update on this:

The first volume was released last week. The print run sold out before release so they’ve gone to a second printing. It’s a gorgeous book. The same dimensions as an Omnibus but not as thick, obviously. I’ve only read the first chapter so far but hope to get further along and maybe even finish it this weekend. I’ve not read these issues in a few years so it’s all seeming quite new again.

Even if you don’t want to pick up the hardcover, read the free pencil issues on his site. You won’t regret it at all. I posted the link in my original post.
