If the president was at all mentally sound I would say no way. The last shut down was way more expensive for Republicans than it was the Democrats, polling wise, and it would be a disaster for the multiple Republican senators fighting to win once-safe territories on what this presidency has already reduced to a slim 3-5% advantage.

As it is, I’d say the odds are about even. It’s perfectly in line with the prevent/decry approach they’ve been relying on up until now, so the real question is: can Brad Parscale or some other election minded associate who still seems to have the president’s ear convince him of the electoral cost? Clinton’s survival was heavily contingent on his ability to keep being the president, and to maintain a sense of normalcy during the impeachment. Running in the opposite direction seems like suicide.

One thing is for sure: if he does shut down the government for it, there’s no way in hell he’ll be able to keep himself from saying out loud that he did it to stop the impeachment process, and that will force every Republican in office to spend the last few months before the election defending government shutdowns.

well, to be fair, nothing he's said out loud has really stuck so far so why the hell not try it out.

Now I'm almost hoping it happens.
