And, importantly - 3 songs we haven't heard yet, which bodes well.

The issue with Riot Act isn't this as much as for every Can't Keep there's a Cropduster, which is my definition of Pearl Jam by-the-numbers.
Wow, that's a first. I can't compare Cropduster to any other song in their catalog. I can understand not liking it, but it really sounds like nothing they'd done before.
Yeah that song feels like the complete opposite of Pearl Jam by numbers.

Plus it's a great song.

It's a hard comparison, because for me Riot Act succeeds in a different way, for different reasons, that practically every other PJ album. It's, to me, maybe their album that's most dependent on hearing it straight through as a, for lack of a better term, 'experience.'

That being said, I just don't think any of the songs on here are as good as the best 4 or 5 songs on that record. I don't dislike anything I've heard so far, but I probably wouldn't put any of it above a 3 and a half out of 5 stars.

Oooh, very interesting indeed.
And I still can't believe Infallible is going to be anything less than really good, despite the low-quality recording we have.

It's a pretty good review but why do the Brits always insist on mentioning Kurt Cobain in every single PJ album review?

That review is rather vapid. Can't tell if he actually liked the damn thing or not.

The UK went off "grunge" very quickly, so only ever mention the big buzz-words and memes of its history. I'm surprised this review comments on the second decade at all, actually.
