I'm listening to the Original Release Series pressing of "Harvest" right now and--goddamn--it's like hearing the record for the first time. The only one in the series I don't have is ATGR, and I'm going to buy it right this second.

The moment the needle dropped on that pressing of Harvest I reached for my original copy and put it in the "records to sell" pile.

What pressing is this now?

Also, I would like your expert advice on my current setup. Also, im bringing my Marantz in right now to get touched up.

The Original Release Series pressing, from like 2012, maybe? I'll check.

Everything in the Archives/ORS has sounded phenomenal. Say what you will about Pono and the limits of human hearing etc. etc., but Neil's people put out high-quality LPs.

I wish I LOVED hip hop. IM very particular in what I enjoy listening to when it comes to hip hop. I dont have a vast pallete for it. Im sorry. If i did, i feel I would enjoy this.

Where does sampling and original creation end? I can't tell. For all I know it could all be his own but I cant tell. is he even rapping around this thing?

I dont want to be a dick because im seriously asking someone in the know. Tell me. Dont condescend me but tell me what this is so i can listen to it with new ears.

I used to be in the exact same boat. I, by no means, know much about sampling... just dumb opinions and thoughts I've developed over the years. But I think sampling gets a bad rap (get it?!) because there are so many BAD "artists" out there who try it. Especially now in the computer age, it's become easy for anyone with some basic know-how and a pirated piece of software. A well-crafted, well-thought-out song based on samples is an entirely different experience. The art behind it, for me, is finding songs within songs. Finding relationships between samples from completely different songs and stitching them together. I love the moment when two samples are linked together by a single beat or a single rhythm that you would have never noticed. And I think a lot of the art form is finding those relationships between samples... it's like a treasure hunt for the musician. The same feeling one might get when finding an awesome album in the used section.... or a hip hop artist being floored by hearing the way another hip hop artist twists a rhyme or creates a flow of syllables. I've seen guys get totally floored by hearing two samples used together... like a huge, "Holy shit how did they think of those two songs working together???" or "How did they think of that vocal rhythm on top of that backbeat?"

Of course, its use is definitely still a very wildly debated topic, and it's only getting worse with its rise into pop culture. The history of sampling is really interesting. But once D-rated producers with enough payola started getting their hands on the trend, it's really put a stain on the art of it.

Those 2238's were good... sorta the last of the era I think. Once you hit the 80's things started to cheapen out. Everything became so plastic and japanese (I can say that here right?).
