So basically, the Republican controlled senate now says it's ok for a sitting US president, regardless of party, to use US aid to a foreign country in exchange for personal favors.

That’s all that’s left to go with at this point.

If this does come up in a future administration, certainly this instance will be used as precedent.

Sondland tying Pence to this is awful.

The party line response today will be “nothing to see here,” but they’ll start taking the temperature on their base immediately in battleground states. I expect this weeks hearingns will make a significant dent in the service member base. The bigger question is the constitutional/Tea Party set — will this be enough for them to abandon ship?

Republicans will be looking at any available option to avoid a senate trail if this testimony doesn’t get at least a little better for them.

They’ve clearly been killing time for the last two days, tossing out language that keeps their base from getting upset without actually defending (or trying to defend) anything at all. Hence the whole shitshow of asking people who were on the call and are confirming the whistleblower’s summary if they can help out the whistleblower.

Kentucky, Virginia, and Louisiana were red flag events. The whole reason they’re in this mess at all is because Trump knew he couldn't win an election and needed outside help...and now he’s made his chances even worse. Saving him is increasingly gainless, but openly ditching him would be catastrophic. They need an out.

“Can you explain what you mean by this ‘continuum of insidiousness,’” the chair asks the opposition’s chosen witness.
