there's been quite a lot of good new (new to us, anyway) pearl jam these last few months.

blueviper wrote:anyone listen to Cold Conf(c)ession and Let it Ride anymore? I haven't for a long time, and I feel all of the LB songs I've heard are better than CC and LiR.

While I think those two are OK songs, I like the dynamics I'm hearing with LB.
i listened to both of those songs this morning when i woke up

CC
getaway
MYM
LIR
LTRP

Swallowed Whole

LB

Sirens

Of what I've heard so far, and most on minimal listens so it will all probably change

Cold confession
Mind your manners
Sirens
Lightning bolt
Let it ride
Future days

I think I've listened to CC and LIR 5 times each because i didn't wanna listen too much encased they were gonna be on the album. MYM about 12 times, FD and LB each 3 times from the wrigley show and 2 times for sirens

you know you're allowed to listen to them more now (CC/LIR). we're pretty sure at this point they aren't on the record :)

Just listened to all the LB songs quite loudly while driving in the car. Eddie is definitely too loud on just about all of them all the way through, my biggest gripe with LB so far.

I bet I have listened to Sirens followed by Swallowed whole about 100 times

I like songs that sound finished. Lir does not fall into that category

Let it Ride sounds pretty finished, especially considering with this band (not without exception) it seems like lyrics are the last step to be taken, and that has a full, coherent set to them.

I think I like Cold Confession and Let it Ride better than anything we've heard so far, but to be fair I'd say that's more because those two songs are particularly strong rather than anything we've heard being really bad or anything.

I think let it ride is a fully realized song, but it sounds muted--like a very rough mix.

Muted in production or performance? I think in the performance, they're never playing it in the same manner they did on Riot Act, emphasizing nuance over going for a big vocal moment. Makes sense, I guess, since it was recorded not soon after that record I believe.

do you mean they are playing it in the same manner?

I think mostly muted in the production. It's been a while since I heard Let it Ride--but I always felt that everything seemed a bit muffled.

certainly a low key performance would exacerbate this

I think part of the thing with the production is that it sounds (at least to my ears), like it hasn't gone through a mastering phase yet; the volume hasn't really been increased in any manner, which is unlike pretty much every studio PJ album, especially the newer ones.

That being said, I think CC and Let it Ride are probably demos. They're certainly less adorned than studio PJ songs tend to be. I just don't think it's a blemish on them in the way they are on some other demos we've heard of theirs. It's not like Puzzles and Games, where the entire second verse is just missing. These songs haven't been run through the ringer in terms of studio polish, but they feel done as songs.

oh i totally agree. I don't think they need any more writing. They are fully realized ideas that may not have been fully processed. In the case of CC I think the rough edges add to the feel of the song. I think they take away from Let it Ride.

Yeah, just kinda leaving all pj alone for a bit, trying to take a brake from all of it till the album is out

Cool I often do that too when a new (personally anticipated) release is due out soon. Only thing I've listened to several times this week was Sirens, but giving that a rest now until we get a full blown leak or release day (hopefully the former!).

Not me, I've found myself re-listening to all the previous albums in their entirety.
