I just had a terrifying conversation with my mother about impeachment. I'm pretty shook honestly. Shes straight up brainwashed.

I bet we all have a couple family members like this. They scare me.

I tried to calm her down by joking that this type of division is exactly what Russia wants. She looked at me like I was a complete moron and said "Russia doesn't have anything to do with it".

I had a similar conversation with my dad last time I saw him. Granted we're pretty removed from it all over here and all, but it started off with him saying that they needed to get rid of Pelosi - which then somehow led onto Trump not being perfect, but still a good leader for the US. I asked him how he felt about the lies and the pussy grabbing and he said 'I said he wasn't perfect!'

Trump's not even a good leader for his toilet, much less one of the biggest powerhouse nations in the world.

That's the thing. He's not done anything to help the country. She also straight faced told me he's done more than the last several presidents combined though so what do I know.

My favorite argument is when they say he's the best president we've ever had. He's done more for this country than anyone in history. Here's how this conversation went:

Me: really? What about Abraham Lincoln and freeing the slaves?

Them: Well, he caused the civil war by freeing the slaves

Me: but freeing the slaves was a GOOD thing. (Ignoring the obvious inaccuracy)

Them: THE CIVIL WAR WAS FOUGHT FOR STATES' RIGHTS, NOT SLAVERY!!!

Me: but what was the most important right they didn't want to lose?

Them: Abraham Lincoln wishes he did as much for the USA as Donald Trump!

Me: well, what about George Washington? He did a lot of good things for our country.

Them: What? Name one thing Washington did that was anywhere near as good as what Trump's doing for the USA right now.

Me: well, he didn't have his daddy get him out of the draft. He actually fought for the ideal that America should be its own country and helped secure its independence.

Them: he grew pot and had slaves! Donald Trump has never smoked pot and he's never owned slaves!

This is when i simply left the room.

When I was in NM visiting my mom a few weeks ago, she legit said to me, and I quote, "Barack Obama is the most corrupt President in the history of the United States." When I pressed her on that she said, and I quote, "When all this stuff comes out about Biden and his son... you'll see. You'll see."

Really wish in retrospect that we hadn’t spent the tea party and birtherism period humoring our loved ones’ free fall into insular, racist, false messaging safety on the basis of just kind of hoping it would pass on its own.

I have the same problem with some family members and, in retrospect, “he said Obama’s a secret Muslim but he’s my uncle so I just ignore it” should have been “he said Obama’s a secret Muslim and he’s my uncle, so I owe it to him to at least try to stop this ugly trajectory.”

I pushed back just a bit today on my mom. Nothing crazy. She basically went nuts on me. She tried to guilt and shame me while choking back tears, which looking back seems really toxic and manipulative. I definitely hear what you're saying but easier said than done for sure.
