Some people here tend to jump on newcomers too much. Its not that they are overly aggressive towards them, but when its 10 guys jumping on the new guy, I can see why they run screaming from this place. It makes this site worse, IMO.

When you see some other regular poster disagree with a newcomer for the same reason you want to jump on them, don't pile on, ok?

In fairness , especially lately, it seems like alot of new posters have been coming here looking for a fight about the perceived negativity here.

Having said that your point and recommendation is a good one in general.

I think the "negativity" on this board is pretty exaggerated. Yeah, there's a good amount of snarkiness here, and yes this seems to be the haven for people who dare to not think the nine greatest albums of all-time are the nine Pearl Jam albums, but I don't find it to be especially negative compared to any other message board I've seen with the exception of The Pit. If it weren't for the Pit being the most one-sided love fest on the internet, I think people would realize the range of opinions on here is pretty standard for any band that has been around for over a decade.

What is unique about this board is the way it seems people join just to tell everyone how sick all of the negativity makes them. I assume it's just Pit members coming over here as part of some greater crusade of Jamily Values. Pearl Jam fans get pretty butthurt pretty easily I guess.

Oh, and the other thing that is unique is that when there is legitimate discourse on the band here, it tends to operate on a higher level than on most other band sites. But some of us think that's a good thing.

I'd agree in the sense that this place is really not that negative compared to some other boards for other bands I've dipped my toe into. There's a lot of criticism, but I think there is much, much worse out there.

Their Facebook promoters are getting as annoying as those crappy bands that plagued MySpace. We know lightning bolt is coming out, no need to tell us twice a day!

Message boards always run through this bit, when an artist experiences a creative low ebb.

Instead of going "Wow, the new material is failing to impress a lot of long time fans," it's easier to just shake your head and wonder, "damn, when did people get so negative??"

Just like it's easier for the disappointed faction to go "Ha, you're all a bunch of lazy listening apologists," than to say "obviously, there are some people who enjoy the new output in spite of what some of us consider a greatly diminished quality."

yes. not ten guys. more like 3 or 4. It used to be a lot worse though.

You want negativity you should have seen the weezer forums four years ago. Fans would literally tell rivers himself in threads to give it up. And he posted there! RM is not negative, it's reasonable here. The pit, on the other hand, is creepily supportive..I bet pearl jam is the only band those people listen to..

this is the only music message board I've ever been a part of, so I have nothing to compare us to other than my ideal

Despite my post count I'm a long time lurker, occasional poster (had to re-register for some reason...)... I always enjoy this site for the deeper examinations of the music, weather it's lyrics, production, interpretations, etc...it can be pretty thought provoking, and at times hilarious...that being said, the biggest turnoff to me is the constant bitching about the 10c and the band...now I'm not a fan of 10c much of the time either, and think much of the merch is rediculous...but it's pretty never ending here...even worse though is the way some here just try to slam the band at every turn, as if the band have somehow wronged them by not living up to their expectations... Seeing that all the time gets annoying....
All that being said, I tend to enjoy the sarcastic sniping here as its usually pretty clever and/or entertaining....I just think certain posters need to realize that their opinions on the band aren't always "right" compared to others...if someone digs backspacer, so what? It's music, nothing more, nothing less....we are all part of the jamily (kidding...)

The last 2 pages is the echo chamber in full effect. You have effectively convinced yourselves this is not a negative place. No problems, nothing to fix. Move along folks.

...and you might do well to consider that, for some of the more critical people, it's more the opposite. Instead of being a die hard "this band changed my life" fan, Pearl Jam might be third (or eleventh) on the list of their favorite acts, and they just happened to end up on this forum and enjoy it here.

Being a casual fan can do a lot to foster disapproval where others might search for justification, as well.
