Let me rephrase: within the genre of linear FPSs. They don't set out to be exploratory like BioShock. Different types of games. Within the confines of the kind of game COD sets out to be, it consistently excels.

I'll take Halo in a heartbeat. I think the top-tier of FPS shooters is closer to one another in terms of quality than the top-tier of most genres. How can you only enjoy one of them?

Last Halo I played was Halo 2. Never been a fan of that franchise. COD has kind of spoiled me; none of the others I've tried (Battlefield, Killzone, etc.) can hold a candle to it. Not saying the others are BAD games, just weak by comparison.

Ok. I just find linearity totally uninteresting I guess. Panzer Dragoon and games like that were fun. COD just does nothing for me.

Haven't played a COD game in a long time, but I found them repetitive and dull.

Totally fair. Just a subjective difference in taste. I think linearity still has a place within certain games, and innovation and originality can still happen within that confine. Not everything has to be exploratory. It's probably not a surprise that I tend to find exploration-based games boring and uninteresting (and unrewarding).

So you didn't explore in Mass Effect?

I did out of necessity. But the exploration wasn't what I liked about it and I'm glad they abandoned it in the sequels.

Their linear, scripted nature is a big part of what I like about them. They're essentially blockbuster movies that you play through. And when you combine their immaculate FPS mechanics with that formula, the results are a helluva lot of fun. It has nothing to do with me being "lazy."

You should probably give Wolfenstein: The New Order a whirl, and the Bioshock: Infinite DLCs if you haven't done so already.

Sidequesting can be considered exploring too. Did you track down all the side quests and venture off of the beaten path?

Oh of course, but that's not really what I mean by exploration.

I like linear games, but I'll play games like Skyrim or Fallout linearly, too. Its there if you want it. I usually try to play them like movies or TV shows, treating side quests as sub plots or stand alone episodes. I didn't like the earlier Elder Scrolls games because they were light on the central story and heavy on pointless side quests.
