To be fair to children, they have greater difficult acquiring firearms other than cheap, striker fired crap, but still, they should strive for something better. Should we hand out nylon holsters for small frame pistols at the same time that we hand out condoms, for safety?

This school is about 20 mins from the school where I teach. It’s a great school, one of our two main rivals academically. I have several friends/former colleagues that teach there, I hope they’re ok.

Yeah I was gonna post that but wasn’t sure it was true. That’s what my students were saying kids at that school has tweeted.

Just watched a video somebody posted on Snap. Couldn’t see anything (thankfully) but kids huddled in the corner screaming and you could hear the shooting, sounded like it was right outside the door. Terrifying.

Idk if the whole county did it yesterday or just us, but we did our annual code red drill yesterday, part of which is that they pull the fire alarm during a code red, which we are supposed to ignore because the fear is that exactly what happened today would happen where someone would pull the alarm to flush everybody out into the open.

It just seems like a concerted effort to primary out their advocates one by one, proving the NRA is not immune to politics, would end this.

That’s just fucking crazy to me. There isn’t really a good alternative, and you wouldn’t want to split the group up after what they’ve been through, but “go walk the halls where your friends died, and sit in the classroom where you huddled in the dark and prayed for your life, because Social Studies is important,” is bonkers. Can you imagine going around a few weeks after the Boston marathon bombing and telling people who were there, “there’s a big fucking crowd standing around downtown and you have to join it right now. Go out in the crowd. Go. Go stand there all day. Every day this week. Take your same spot, over where we cleaned off that smear of blood. You remember the blood, right? Yeah, there.”

These events happen in part because of our collective indifference to mental health problems, and nowhere is that indifference clearer than prioritizing minimum required days in class over the traumatic pain these kids have known.

We will see how they do it. I think after Sandy Hook they moved all the classes to a middle school, but they had an unused middle school lying around. A lot of the time, they just send them right back into the building.

Fuck. I hadn’t consider that thoroughly. God damn.
