Gigaton: Official album thread

It's not my favorite song at the moment, but the lyrics and performance on Comes Then Goes is tremendous. And I think there's no other song on this album that can compete with it as far as overall emotional ceiling.

I'm a very keep-to-myself type, never more than a handful of close friends. And, someday, if those fade or if something else happens, this one's really going to be crushing. I'm sure that's already the experience some of you are having.

Yeah, that one is absolutely crushing. There's a whole journey we all could be having with this song, faded relationships can be like experiencing a slow death. It's funny, early reviews were overlooking that one. It was just written as a Pete Towshend ish ditty and that's it. In early listens, people pay attention to the sonics of a song, but this album experiments with song structure. Comes Then Goes even does that to some extent, but the lyrics are stunning. He got into that rarified headspace that delivered Black, Immortality with it's imagery and wordplay. I'm afraid to say he got into the space occupied by some of the alltime greats with that one. Bravo, Ed.

local record shop isn't doing pickups so I ordered it from them with 'free shipping' since it's over $35. after taxes it's almost $50 but hey I'm supporting a local small business right.

My vinyl version arrived today. The records are pressed really well. After being burned with a lot of new vinyl I’m very happy.

After my lukewarm reception to the SBWM release I decided to stop listening and wait for release day. Four listens in, most recently on headphones, I am so impressed with these guys. Hearing SBWM in between Who Ever Said (which blew me away) and DOTC brought it into focus immediately. There's so much to digest still. It's such a group effort, with Ed and Jeff doing most of the (apparent) heavy lifting. Ed's lyrics are thoughtful and focused; much of what he has written here reminds me of Yield. I'm still exploring why that is. The record has really brought back to the front of my mind why I loved this band in the mid-late '90s: The sense of adventure and exploration in their song structures and arrangements, combined with Ed's wit and enthusiastic drive to lift up anyone who cares to listen. When done right, Pearl Jam is a beautiful thing. The record is not perfect I'm sure, but I'm so glad it's here.

Overall: Good album

High-level Notes

The Good:
- First 4 tracks make the album. Indeed quite a run
- Quick Escape is amazing. Best song since Nothing As It Seems. And right after DOTC, it's a feast for the ears
- Take The Long Way: clearly off the SG cutting room floor, which we are happy to accept. This live with louder bass and a little rawer guitar sound could be really great.
- River Cross: Glad it made it on the album. Nothing will ever touch that first live Ed solo version leading into 'I'm So Tired' . But glad this is here. On the right night, could be a great song live.

The Not as Great:
- Back half of the album kinda slow
- Ed never alters his singing style much. There is too much word salad. By like the 4th punker, it's like 'OK you need to switch this up'
